You may be able to resurrect the printer by cleaning the plastic locator(?) strip - it runs parallel to the head travel towards the back juts above the drive belt

If it's dirty/dusty the infrared reader that tracks the head travel isn't able to clearly read the small black lines

I used isopropyl alcohol and lens tissue. I also cleaned the infrared receiver/transmitter lenses attached to the head unit

It helps to remove the cover to get access.

I have a 1290 here that was playing up and that was the solution
