Doepfer

I wonder if anyone can advise me on how i could take a series of modules by doepfer and livewire and plan b  and remove the front panels and design new matching panels for them all ? 
   
   front panel designer people shaeffer (i think thats the company ?) 
   
  my question is  , is it simply a question of measureing the original front panels  up with a  ruler when removed from circuits and then inputting into the fpd software ? 
   
  anyone have any advise ? i hate ( an i know its odd . . .) but i hate the livewire design alongside the doepfer , i love doepfers modernish font and style but dislike the plan b style .It irrtates me , i know , call me a weirdo :) but i got me thinking , ok so its a bit costly but what a freaked out custom design you could make.I very elast i want to redesign 2 of the formats / makes at some point.
