Introduction and some questions

2006-09-27 by kaalimus

Hi everyone!

I have been reading about analog modular synths for a while. And i
think i'm ready to take a plunge into this world. I own two hardware
synths: Access Virus TI KB and Dave Smith Monoevolver. Nice machines,
but when i'm creating a sound with them i always bump in to the same
problem i tried to get away from when i bought HW synths when
software synths are quite fine: I want to use a real physical way to
sculpt the sound, and always see what's going where and what settings
i use.

The Evolver is really bad with this, as you can only see one
parameter value without touching the interface. The Virus is a lot
better, but when browsing the presets, the knobs are at the wrongs
positions. And i have to use the menus to set some values, i have to
browse through the modulations and use the LCD to see what does what.
If i switch an oscillator, the knobs are wrong again.

So that is the problem i'm trying to resolve by buying a real
physical modular synthesizer. And also the modular analog aspect is
sweet.

My music style varies from ambient, noise to rock and metal. But i
haven't released anything. Just doing it for fun.

I'm thinking about buying the Basic System 2, i know, some old
components and stuff. And i would not choose those filters. But
anyway i calculate the price, i will get a great deal by buying this
system. I will get a 6U frame, powersource and inlets, all wired up.
I will get a nice set of basic modules from where to grow my system.

My plan is to make my own wooden cabinet for the synth and use the
power inlet and the powerunit itself for powering the rest of the
cabinet. Is this possible? How many extra busses can be wired to the
PSU if i won't go over the current(1200mA) limit? Don't worry, i got
a friend who is an pro-electrician who will do my wiring. Just asking
these questions to be safe in my investment. If i can't wire more
busses and modules for the PSU in the Basic System, then the price
will not seem that great anymore as the frame might get useless.

Well, i'm off to bed now. Thanks for any and all answers.

Regards,
Kaali
