I have made several of them, they have quite a lot of nice sounding distortion and much less high frequency content than "normal" ringmodulators. I also agree that "normal" ringmodulators sound prety much the same. I have one with an AD633 and one with a LM1496, the difference is very small. "Normal" AC ringmodulators can be made into DC by simply bypassing the input caps. You should have a few of both types.
