If two standard 8 HP wide modules each with 5 sockets and 5 pots are mounted next to each other a 18.5cm tip-to-tip cable will allow you to connect any socket on one to any socket on the other. I think an extra 1½cm slack wouldn't hurt, so 20cm tip-to-tip sounds to me like a good choice for a shorter length patch cable.
