The gate inputs are to switch the modules different modes.Like the 3 way switch above them. I hardly use that feature I must confess. The real power of this module is the vca + filter mode. For that nice 'sound is soft and more filtered' vs. 'sound is loud and less filtered' approach. In filter mode it is a damn fine filter i think. The VCA is a wee bit slow for percussive work I think. That might explain your findings.
