A-101-2 Vactrol Low Pass Gate - WTF?

2008-12-29 by Richard Scott

after playing with this for half an hour at Schneiders, manual in hand, trying and wholly failing to recreate that uniquely woody marimba sound from a buchla music easel i really have to ask: what IS this module for?

Can someone offer me a user example that makes wise use of the two Gate inputs?

Can it really make this percussive sound I'm after, or should i be looking elsewhere?

Richard

The gate inputs are to switch the modules different modes.Like the 3 way
switch above them.
I hardly use that feature I must confess.
The real power of this module is the vca + filter mode.
For that nice 'sound is soft and more filtered' vs. 'sound is loud and less
filtered' approach.
In filter mode it is a damn fine filter i think.
The VCA is a wee bit slow for percussive work I think. That might explain
your findings.

Greetings,

Ernst

Re: [Doepfer_a100] A-101-2 Vactrol Low Pass Gate - WTF?

2008-12-29 by Brandon Daniel

I can get mostly there with two lowpass gates and a dual trigger delay.

Set the two LPGs in the signal path serially, first one set to
lowpass, second one set to VCA, send each the output of half of the
dual trigger delay, both halves of which are being triggered from the
same source. Set the Lowpass trigger as short as possible, set the VCA
trigger longer to taste.

Examples here:

http://bleep.fdiskc.com/2008/12/20/bleeping-away/

and here:

 http://bleep.fdiskc.com/2008/12/24/random-gates-analog-version/

Both use two plan b model 15 oscillators, one as modulator one as
carrier, into the 101-2 LPGs in series. The timbre of the oscillators
going into the LPGs is just as important to the sound as the character
of the LPGs themselves, IMO.

actually the plan B demo is underwheming, I can't see them selling many on the strength of that. this is much closer to the sound I'm after - I have no idea how it is made:

What you are looking for is a low pass gate filter:

http://www.buchla.com/historical/b200/292-lopassgate.html

There are several DIY implementations of this filter/gate, but no
commercially available ones. Grab that soldering iron!

OK, except the Doepfer one already mentioned. Sorry, shot too quick on
that one... I spend a lot more time on the SDIY forums and lists than
here, so making it yourself is always my first response ;-)

The Doepfer one seems like it should do what the Buchla ones did, but of
course Buchla sprinkled a lot of extra magic in his designs...

Hi,

I find Plan B Model 13 to be close enough to the Buchla 292 to make you
happy. I've got the triple LPG version and it is definetly woody "a la"
Buchla. The Doepfer one is surely great it it's own right, but I believe
that you're better with a Model 13 for the sound you're looking for.

the doepfer is unusual because its a single unit and the others are all dual or quad. I wonder if that is a problem, also I wonder how essential a gate delay, or dual gate delay is for ths kind of sound - I have an AS single gate delay at the moment

Re: [Doepfer_a100] Re: A-101-2 Vactrol Low Pass Gate - WTF?

2009-01-03 by Pieter Volger

After watching the video I tried it now for an hour with 2 model 15 VCOs
and a A-101-2. I got a lot of nice perc sounds but not that nice smooth
ringing sound...

Re: A-101-2 Vactrol Low Pass Gate - WTF?

2009-01-04 by (i think you can figure that out)

Hey Peter...

It's the vactrol Deopfer used. Their's are much much faster
responding (read: less of the natural decay inherent with that). A
downside of this is there's much less ringing in the combined mode,
which is what your wtf'ing. The upside, little or no bleed through. I
opted for the more expensive Perkin-Elmer vactrols and a Sallen-Key
architecture. The gain n bleed through was a tradeoff I was willing
to make in order to get the marvelous ringing that goes with the P-E's
in a Sallen-Key config. If that's what your after, check out the Model 13.

In that the Doepfer unit is fitted with a resonance knob, therefore
more of a traditional filter as opposed to a filtering 12dB/oct gating
device like the M13. So the vac's he used were better suited for this
application. If anyone's noted the rather lazy response of the M12 in
high Q mode, that's what I'm talking about...and that's why the M13
has no resonance knob!

If you're thinking of simply changing the vac's to the Perkins, you
can't use the very same ones as the M13/Buchla 292, but there are
others that will improve things a bit. Better, but not the same and
while they increases the ring it greatly effects proper operation of
the three modes. It's a different filter structure.
