For what I understood & measured with a volt meter: At zero it is muted/silent.Fully clockwise it is just passing through the signal. Fully anti-clockwise it is passing through the signal inverted. Anything in between is attenuation. Extra feature: if nothing is patched in to channel 1 it serves as an offset generator. (Adding/subtracting accordingly to which way you turned its pot) My 138c manages to add 5.8 volt and subtract 6.9 volt. Hope that helps.
