I don't own this module, but I recently became able to read and 
understand what I am reading. So now I can can read the description on 
the website and I will answer with that superior knowledge:

Yes. It will be able to double the incoming amplitude.

No. The 183-2 will be the second standard answer. And also it was always 
dead simple to change the gain of the input channels of mixers or 
filtes. And of course there are other brands, which offer modules with 
possiblities like that.

No.

> 4) Should I just DIY a module and make an entry into the modular

Go on and get wealthy and rich; there are a lot of people who started as 
unknown module makers and which today own mansions on the Côte d' Azur, 
yachts with pool and all the other basic things...
