A-183-2 Please say it's true

A-183-2 Please say it's true

2009-01-26 by Doug

Hi folks, is the A-183-2 (http://www.doepfer.de/a1832.htm) for real? I
want four! This is exactly what I am after. Especially this part:

"The amplification range for the input will be probably 0...+2 in the
attenuator mode, and -2...+2 in the polarizer mode, i.e. the maximum
amplification will be x2 and the module can be used also to amplify CV
or audio signals (for other amplifications only the value of a
resistor has to be changed)."

Oh, and being able to amplify audio through this thing would be
useful. Perhaps all you experts can tell me there is an alternative
out there already. I'm surprised I can't simply amplify audio (gain >
1). I must be doing it wrong.

The A119 does it perfectly well.

The A-119 does gain you mean? Okay, so now I'm going to get picky.
Do I have to spend 8HP to get a single channel of audio gain?

Maybe this is the DIY project I've been longing for ;)

It's a pre-amp. So yes, it does gain. But it is doing a lot more! It's also
an envelope follower and a gate/trigger generator.

Be careful though it can also distort your signal like crazy, if you are not
careful.

In the video I posted earlier I use it to amplify the output of the A128
fixed filter bank, which tends to be fairly soft mostly.

Greetings,

Ernst

Okay so is the A-183-2 really be coming out in a month or so, or has
it changed?

2) Will it possibly be able to handle audio so that I can use it to
amplify audio with gain>1?

3) Is the A-119 really the standard answer (really the only
reasonable answer)for audio gain in euro format?

3b) Is this ridiculous situation?

4) Should I just DIY a module and make an entry into the modular
market?

5) Does anyone care?

6) Have you seen that latest whiz bang module from A$$ Plunderers R
Us?

But you'll have to deign to the level of AS.

Interesting how the answer is often, "...AS has that..."

Hello Doug

I don't own this module, but I recently became able to read and
understand what I am reading. So now I can can read the description on
the website and I will answer with that superior knowledge:

> 2) Will it possibly be able to handle audio so that I can use it to
> amplify audio with gain>1?
Yes. It will be able to double the incoming amplitude.

> 3) Is the A-119 really the standard answer (really the only
> reasonable answer)for audio gain in euro format?
No. The 183-2 will be the second standard answer. And also it was always
dead simple to change the gain of the input channels of mixers or
filtes. And of course there are other brands, which offer modules with
possiblities like that.

> 3b) Is this ridiculous situation?
No.

> 4) Should I just DIY a module and make an entry into the modular
> market?
Go on and get wealthy and rich; there are a lot of people who started as
unknown module makers and which today own mansions on the Côte d' Azur,
yachts with pool and all the other basic things...

> 5) Does anyone care?
No. But some laugh about.

Oh yeah, there is also this highly non-ridiculous module, already available:

So far we have no release date for the A-138m (Matrix Mixer), A-183-1 (Dual
Attenuator) and A-183-2 (Offset Generator/Attenuator/Polarizer). Custom made
potentiometers will be used in these modules and we are still waiting for
the samples of the manufacturer. As soon as the samples arrive we will test
them and if they are OK I expect that the modules will be available ~ April.
If the potentiometer samples will not fit the release date has to be
postponed

yes (max. 2), for other max. amplifications the module has to be modified
(changing the value of a resistor)

Best wishes

Maybe too late, but

Wouldn't the A-183-2 be more valuable, if it had simple mixer function too? There is room (at least if omitting the second output) for a unity gain input.

Since I have A-133, I would prefer 0...+1 and -1...+1 amplification ranges instead of 0...+2 and -2...+2.
