I have to agree with Dieter on this one I'm afraid. I was hot for the  
matrix patcher as a performance tool but I was going to go to the next  
step and hardwire connections to the normalized pins of the row/ 
columns - thus having a "typical" setup that would get burned into my  
mind over time. The most common thing would be the standard parts of a  
typical synth voice - VCO-VCF-VCA with a modulation matrix - if you  
start planning out such patches you soon find out that the 8x8 matrix  
is pretty limited. Coming from the place of being an ex EMS Synthi  
owner (I had 3) the lure of the matrix was pretty high (it was a  
16x16) but in a modular I think I will get more out of a couple of  
A-182 (or better still a A-138m or two). As far as modules go a matrix  
module is perfect for the DIY inclined. It could be made with push- 
push switches or the cheapest jacks you can find (I have even priced  
RCA jacks). They just have to be "stereo" jacks or insulated from the  
front panel like the Cliff jacks to be useful. With stereo jacks you  
can wire them as inserts and be able to patch in external modules into  
and out of the cross points. It will still be an expensive module  
since to do a 8x8 you need 64 of whatever you buy. If I had a rig with  
a couple of A-111-5 modules in it the matrix patcher would be a great  
addition.
