Outside of the new algorithms, don't forget that the new DSP is quieter as
well. :)

That'll be nice. The MK1 was a tad noisy. I confess I'm also really
interested in the DSP based unit that Dieter has planned.

Look at the latest version that will be probably available end of this year:
http://www.doepfer.de/a1871.htm
We added a display to avoid the troublesome looking into the table on a slip
of paper that tells which position of the rotary switch corresponds to which
effect and which parameters are voltage controlled.

Best wishes

We are still in negotiations with the supplier of the DSP board to improve
the algorithms. They told us that they will improve the algorithms but did
not promise that it will be perfect. We also realized that many customers
are even happy with the artefacts that appear if certain parameters are
changed.

out of interest, which effects parameters do have artifacts? Seems to me
artifacts on pitch shifting could be seen as a feature but artifacts on
a modulated delay or reverb, erm, could be less good...

Like many people I wasn't convinced by the first generation of the
Z5000, so I'm waiting to be very sure one of you has got it right before
scooping up one of these two DSP units!

We will explain in detail which parameters are affected as soon as we obtain
the revised version of the DSP module.
In the first version even the delay time is affected (when it is reduced).

RE: [Doepfer_a100] *** Tiptop Z5000 upgrade ***

2009-09-08 by david.salter@thomsonreuters.com

Hi Dieter,

I have a number of pieces of equipment that produce artefacts as part of
the way CV controls digital elements and use those artefacts as part of
the composition. However I would hope that as this unit is going to be
in the 250 Euro bracket that those could be reduced to a minimum.

I accept that it's all about AD resolution and CPU cycles and these cost
money but the cleaner the CV transitions the better would be my opinion.

Thanks

David

imho it is very common that you get zipper noises when
you modulate the delay time of a digital delay.
i would not be surprised if the newer z5000 as well as the
forthcoming doepfer dsp module would still have aliasing
when the delay time is modulated. for me that is part of
the deal with all digital delay processors, at least those
which are affordable.

Hi Ingo,

I know your correct. One can wish though ;o)

One of the reasons I like my Behringer stomp box is the made zipper
noises it makes.

yeah, it also costs £20?

i love my old vesta kaza digi delays because they are basically crap and
make a very special sound when they are failing to keep up with the CV...

but from a modern unit dedicated I'd expect something better :)

although to be realistic my eventide eclipse can barely keep up with
midi modulation without zippering and glitching

A-133 as VCA?

2009-09-09 by Richard Scott

basically I'm looking for a VCA and an inverter on a single module, the
smaller the better because its for a beauty case

can I use the A-133 as a "normal" VCA? if so, what would the quality be
like? Comparable with a 132-3? or more like the 132-1?

perhaps there is a way to use the A134-2 crossfader like this also? it
must have an inverter in there. Can one channel be a VCA and the other
an inverter for CVs?

One such genius is Rob Hordijk:
http://home.deds.nl/~modular/dump/MatrixPhasers.jpg
- cool thing about that particular matrix; you can use an insert cable
and patch in a vca or whatever into the signal chain. Really clever unit.

I think a winner looks different :-)

I've decided to publish only new modules if I'm really convinced of it
myself or if there are sufficient inquiries. Both does not apply to the
patch matrix module.

Though I don't use my A-100 as often as many of you I cannot see any
advantage of the patch matrix (and I tried it several times). Such a matrix
is a perfect tool in a semi-modular unit with a fixed number of
predetermined modules and with inputs and outputs of the matrix fixed to
certain parameters. In a modular synth like the A-100 one has much more than
8 in/outputs and one would be limited to a few parameters only that could be
handled via the matrix. And you will always have to remember to which
in/outputs the matrix rows/columns are assigned. This is just my opinion as
a (temporary) user. In any case I never missed a patch matrix in the A-100.
Even during exhibitions (NAMM, Musikmesse) and workshops where I showed the
prototype of the matrix the acceptance was very poor.

We could start the production of the module as the development has been
finished already many months ago. But even from the economic point if view
this does not make sense as there are not sufficient inquiries. Maybe we
could sell 10 or 20 of these modules but that's not sufficient to start the
production (out minimum production batch is 100). And I'm not sure if the
customers will continue to feel confident as soon as they have it in use.

You may convince me to manufacture the module (but you will be probably not
able to convince me about the usefulness of the module :-)

Best wishes

Is the module proposed a passive module, or otherwise?

If its simply a passive module, is there anything (much) to stop those who want one to simply get a front panel blank, some jacks, and some solid core wire?

2009-09-10 by james.husted@mac.com

I have to agree with Dieter on this one I'm afraid. I was hot for the
matrix patcher as a performance tool but I was going to go to the next
step and hardwire connections to the normalized pins of the row/
columns - thus having a "typical" setup that would get burned into my
mind over time. The most common thing would be the standard parts of a
typical synth voice - VCO-VCF-VCA with a modulation matrix - if you
start planning out such patches you soon find out that the 8x8 matrix
is pretty limited. Coming from the place of being an ex EMS Synthi
owner (I had 3) the lure of the matrix was pretty high (it was a
16x16) but in a modular I think I will get more out of a couple of
A-182 (or better still a A-138m or two). As far as modules go a matrix
module is perfect for the DIY inclined. It could be made with push-
push switches or the cheapest jacks you can find (I have even priced
RCA jacks). They just have to be "stereo" jacks or insulated from the
front panel like the Cliff jacks to be useful. With stereo jacks you
can wire them as inserts and be able to patch in external modules into
and out of the cross points. It will still be an expensive module
since to do a 8x8 you need 64 of whatever you buy. If I had a rig with
a couple of A-111-5 modules in it the matrix patcher would be a great
addition.

Have any more info on that matrix? Looks like something I might "need".

In answer to your request for more info about Rob Hordijk's matrix: I
think Rob won't mind me posting this. Apologies if its off topic, its
definitely modular, but definitely not euro: Coincidentally, I just
ordered one today BTW its not cheap either.

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1266194/BlippoosMatrix.bmp

"It is a fully fledged matrix, so the primary use is to mix any input to any
output, exactly like on the VCS3. For pins it uses 1/4" stereo jacks with
the tip and ring connected, but no cable connected. This way one can easily
make 'pins' oneself when some get lost over time.

Additionally the matrix is active, meaning that every input and every output
is buffered. The VCS3 is in contrast unbuffered. So, the extra functions are
bonuses because everything is buffered. This means that the crosspoints in
the matrix field are isolated from each other, no extra 'pin' will influence
another 'pin'. And the use of buffers also gives these extra options, that
can be used all at once."

its not proposed, its exists

but good question: is it active, and buffered?

Just the prototypes exist. Here is the link you probably meant to
paste (the doepfer site uses frames so copy paste just sends the frame
addy :
http://www.doepfer.de/a1841.htm
The doepfer is a passive matrix - It says under the power
requirements: "Strombedarf/Current: 0 mA (passives Modul, passive
module)"

The active matrix would be a bit more expensive I'm sure but I'm sure
it would be a much better system seeing that no module makers seem to
be buffering the ins and outs of their modules. The chances of sending
a CV to a bunch of inputs or visa versa is so much greater in a matrix
patching system than in a patch cord based rig.

sorry for my previous mail I was getting the matrix mixer and patch
mixer all twizzled up in my brain yesterday. I have to cook for 30

The prototype is not active and not buffered. Introducing buffers would be
easy but if buffers are added the directions (i.e. which sockets are inputs
and which are outputs) are fixed. In the passive version the direction is
not predetermined. Evenspecial connectors with resistors, capacitors or
diodes and so on can be used (but that may be possible with buffers too,
depends upon the buffer type).
