In answer to your request for more info about Rob Hordijk's matrix: I 
think Rob won't mind me posting this. Apologies if its off topic, its 
definitely modular, but definitely not euro: Coincidentally, I just 
ordered one today BTW its not cheap either.

"It is a fully fledged matrix, so the primary use is to mix any input to any
output, exactly like on the VCS3. For pins it uses 1/4" stereo jacks with
the tip and ring connected, but no cable connected. This way one can easily
make 'pins' oneself when some get lost over time.

Additionally the matrix is active, meaning that every input and every output
is buffered. The VCS3 is in contrast unbuffered. So, the extra functions are
bonuses because everything is buffered. This means that the crosspoints in
the matrix field are isolated from each other, no extra 'pin' will influence
another 'pin'. And the use of buffers also gives these extra options, that
can be used all at once."
