and yes, things like "beefier" are so entirely subjective to begin with anyway. only in music tech would you find professionals using terms like "beef", "sparkle", "oomph", "bright", etc as precise enginerring terminology! ;-)

As far as I know the DIY synth and the DE2 are quite similar (if not
equal). The only difference I find is the clipped Saw at the DE2
@Christian: Your impression that the DE1 is beefier than the DE2 should
be caused mainly by the circumstance, that the DE2 uses a exponential
VCA for the Envelope, while the DE1 uses a linear VCA.
Of course there everyone can use any type of VCA he wants. But to my
opinion the VCA for the loudness envelope should be linear, since the
envelope itself has an exponential curve already.
Exponential VCAs are intended for linear control voltages like LFOs or
velocity.
