DIY synth versus Dark Energy

DIY synth versus Dark Energy

2015-04-20 by syndromeda@telenet.be

Does anybody knows if there is a significant difference in sound between a Dark Energy 1 (or A-111-5) and the Doepfer DIY-synth?

TIA,

Danny

Dieter, can you please tell me something about it...nobody seems to know.
Thanks in advance.
Grtz, Danny.

i'm not Dieter (sorry ^_^ ), but as i understand it the various DIY synth possibilities are more or less based on the circuitry of the A100. the Dark Energy 1 is based almost entirely on a single Curtis chip, basically and entire synth voice on one chip (it was originally used in the Sequential Circuits Six-Track & Max early multitibral synths from the mid-80s) - this chip is no longer made and became so rare that's why Dieter had to discontinue the DE1 and completely redesign the voice circuit for the DE2.
i have a Lot of A100 modular, a DE1 & DE2, and they all sound subtly different from each other. actual differences in sound are difficult to describe becuase such things are so subjective, but the DE1 to me sounds a bit fuller and "beefier" than the DE2, which seems more "sharp" and has an "edge" to the sound... and yes those are all very precise scientifically-based audio engineering terms. ;-) and of course the A100 can ptentially sound like either of them or something else entirely depending on which modules you choose.
just my 2 cents! :-)

Thanks Christian, I also have a lot of Doepfer stuff and yes, also a DE1 (A-111-5), but the combination of the DIY- Doepfer and the XAOC Devices - Karl-Marx-Stadt looks very interesting.
Grtz.

Hello

As far as I know the DIY synth and the DE2 are quite similar (if not
equal). The only difference I find is the clipped Saw at the DE2

@Christian: Your impression that the DE1 is beefier than the DE2 should
be caused mainly by the circumstance, that the DE2 uses a exponential
VCA for the Envelope, while the DE1 uses a linear VCA.

Of course there everyone can use any type of VCA he wants. But to my
opinion the VCA for the loudness envelope should be linear, since the
envelope itself has an exponential curve already.
Exponential VCAs are intended for linear control voltages like LFOs or
velocity.

It depends if you mean the Dark Enery I or II. The Dark Energy I is totally different from the DIY synth. But many parts of the Dark
Energy II are very similar to the DIY synth with only a few exceptions (like the clipped sawtooth of the Dark Energy II, two LFOs of
the Dark Energy II).

Best wishes

Thanks Dieter,

That's exactly what I wanted to hear. I have an A-111-5 in my rack, which is similar to the DE 1, imo. Now I can buy a Doepfer DIY-synth and complete it with the very good looking and full of features "XAOC Devices - Karl-Marx-Stadt".
Thanks again, have a nice weekend,

ah, very interesting, thank you Florian! must begin more new experiments immediately...

and yes, things like "beefier" are so entirely subjective to begin with anyway. only in music tech would you find professionals using terms like "beef", "sparkle", "oomph", "bright", etc as precise enginerring terminology! ;-)
