I know 3D panning with joysticks from professional consoles. The most
remarkable thing is, that linear movements are not recognized by the ear as
a straight line in the acoustic room. You need to stay quite long in the
extrem positions while going from front to rear. 
So a X-formed movement (FL->RR->RL->FR) should be done more like a 8
figure.

Yes, quite nice effect, and quite simple to realzie on the Nord Modular.

The more astonishing 3D stuff nevertheless is positioning signals with
reverbs and early directions. But this is VERY difficult to realize with
separate devices.
