This is definitely not true. An exponential VCA is only required to 
realize a volume change by a linear voltage which fits to tje human 
auditory habits for loudness changes.

Example: If you have a VCA mixing console. And you use linear faders, 
which provide the Cv for the VCAs; you will have to use expVCAs to 
realize the same you would have with so called logarithmic faders.

But for loudness changes which are similar to e.g. a natural instrument 
you do not require a exp. VCA necessarily! Especially the compressed 
sound, that we are used in todays popular music, tends much more to a 
sound, that should be realized with linear VCAs.

Or in simple words: "If you want it sound real fat, then use linear VCAs"
