RE: doepfer vs.....???

2005-02-10 by Pierre Zeeman

Hi,

>(I basically want an excuse not to buy the voyager)

I have both but I bought the voyager after I already had a 12U doepfer+AS
system. One of the reasons why I bought it was to use as a controller for
my modular. The value of the voyager increases greatly if you have a
modular synth because you can then fully utilise all of its cv ins and outs
(there is always a forest of patch leads running from the voyager to the
modular :D). Make no mistake, it's a lovely sounding instrument but it is
limited and if you're a tweaker you will ultimately become frustrated with a
voyager on its own as there are only so many sounds you can make with a
fixed osc->filter->vca architecture. If I had to choose, I would go for the
doepfer. The doepfer can cover almost all the ground the voyager can and
then go far beyond it. Admittedly the doepfer doesn't have that moogy
thing, but then that thing has been beaten to death over the last 30 years.
Not surprisingly, what I like most about the voyager is that it has its own
sound, quite different to its forebears (although it does the moog sound
well enough if you're so inclined to want it). I am very glad I have both -
they play very nicely together.

As for the choice of modular, doepfer would actually be my first choice even
if I had a lot more money simply because of the small size (dotcom and motm
get huge very, very quickly) and the massive and amazing range of modules
offered. Plus, they interoperate with the other eurorack and fracrack
modulars (both blacet and wiard make lovely modules) and Paul Schreiber of
MOTM is apparently toying with the idea of releasing his modules in doepfer
format as well so the range of possibilities is only going to increase.

Some many choices, so little cash :)

rds

Pierre
