I think it could be done entirely with ttl chips, no? a 9v battery should power it fine. This is sort of what I had in mind. The 'adapter' would have 3 or 4 cables coming out of it to plug into the appropriate plugs on the 155. TTL chips are almost free. The most expensive thing would be the 1/8" connectors I think! Normalling them is a neat idea - good point, never really thought of that. but I guess that means those 2 modules can't be used with the 16 step sequences. I'm sort of surprised that the 155 doesn't have a simple switch for this. I'm sure it would have been very easy to implement into the design & add practically nothing to the cost, but I'm sure there were reasons why not. Hmmm..
