You can do this easily with the clock A-160 clock divider and an A-
150 VC Switch.

If patching is a pain, buy the A-154 and a second A-155 and have it
done for you automagically behind the scenes.

16 step on 155 adapter

2005-03-10 by Paul Wagorn

It seems to me that being able to switch the 155 over to a 16 step in stead
of dual 8 is fairly straightforward using 2 other modules.

Rather than have to rig this up every time one would want to use 16 steps, I
was thinking that it may be a very simple thing to rig up an adapter with a
couple of logic IC's for less than $1 to duplicate this functionality.

This 'adapter' would & would save using a couple of modules to perform this
simple task, and would make it quicker to switch between 8 & 16 steps. Of
course this could all me mounted in the sequencer, but a little adapter box
would do just as wel (perhaps there will be a version of the 155 with a
switch like this built in one day?)

Has anyone tried to make anything like this? Or does everyone just use (or
buy id they don't already have) the extra modules & leave them dedicated to
this purpose?

I was thinking of making something like this, but would love to hear from
anyone else who has tied the same.

What is this $1 adapter you keep refering to? Does it even exist?

RE: [Doepfer_a100] Re: 16 step on 155 adapter

2005-03-10 by Paul Wagorn

Yes, I know - it covers that in the manual. I've already done this
actually. Instead of dedicating 2 modules simply to do this job, I was
thinking you could probably build something with $1 worth of IC's & free up
those modules for other things. Also, it's a pain to have to patch that up
every time you want to switch back & forth.

I was interested in hearing from people who have done this or thought about
out it.

Yes. it's more having to buy or use 2 modules when $1 adapter can do the
job.

But like I said, at the risk of repeating myself. I understand the
alternatives, simply looking to see if anyone else...

hmm...shouldn't be very complicated in theory, but i think practically
you'll need power to do it (and some sort of casing to house the
parts, obviously). switching between two signals in dependency of a
third on/off type signal could be done with a relay or possibly with
one/two transistors...but you'd need power for this. so you've got
1) cv 1
2) cv 2
3) 8/16 select
4) ground
5) +V
6) -V
...kind a thick cable :/

.....i think you'd be better of with modules and pre-patching them
with the normalling-switches in the sockets

RE: [Doepfer_a100] Re: 16 step on 155 adapter

2005-03-10 by Paul Wagorn

I think it could be done entirely with ttl chips, no? a 9v battery should
power it fine. This is sort of what I had in mind. The 'adapter' would
have 3 or 4 cables coming out of it to plug into the appropriate plugs on
the 155.

TTL chips are almost free. The most expensive thing would be the 1/8"
connectors I think!

Normalling them is a neat idea - good point, never really thought of that.
but I guess that means those 2 modules can't be used with the 16 step
sequences.

I'm sort of surprised that the 155 doesn't have a simple switch for this.
I'm sure it would have been very easy to implement into the design & add
practically nothing to the cost, but I'm sure there were reasons why not.

Hmmm.. (paul keeps thinking)

Re: 16 step on 155 adapter

2005-03-11 by Tim Stinchcombe

Hi Paul,

This should be quite easy to do: the divided-down clock signal is
actually already available in the A-155, as an unused pin (on the
CD4024 on the 'controller board'), so you don't need to replicate the
A-160; then you'd just need to replicate the A-150, which could be
done with a single chip (plus maybe a few diodes and things if you
wanted to know which half of the sixteen it was in). The older 150's
used the CD4053 (two in fact, but you could make do with just 1),
which _are_ cheap; the newer 150's use DG409's which are much more
expensive (perhaps maybe ten times so!), but I'm not familar with
them (i.e. I don't have a newer 150).

A little more thought would probably determine whether it was
possible to leave the whole lot permanently wired in, so that you
wouldn't need to switch it at all, just hook up to two (new) sockets
when you wanted to go to 16 steps. Eminently do-able!
