hello,

there is a sound example of the a109 in the files section
of this group. i don't know if there are any other sound
examples available somewhere. unfortunately i don't
have any specific examples for the a108, a109 and a121
on my homepage. maybe next week i can prepare a file for you.

the a109 has a nice clean sound. you already got
it right, it's a good module for small systems because
of the built-in vca and panner. the filter part is
not the most adventurous if you want to do wild
experimental patches, but it is doing the more
usual jobs very well.

the a108 has a fatter sound, sharing the same sonic
characteristics as the moog ladder filter.
it is a good choice if you want your filterings to
be strong and colorful. the feedback loop insert enables
you to do really wild patches, provided that you have the
right modules to place inside this loop.
so probably the a108 will be more entertaining than the a109.

the character of the a121 is similar to the a109, but
the filter slope is not so steep. a matter of taste.
the benefit is clearly that it's a multimode filter,
making it a lot more flexible soundwise, because both
a108 and a109 do not offer highpass or notch filter types.
i love highpass filters in general, but thats a personal thing.

you see, it's really difficult to suggest only one filter,
because all of them have specific advantages. it is also
largely a matter of taste soundwise. i'd say, if you are
up to experiments, you should take the a108.
if you need more filter types, take the a121.
the a109 is the choice if you find the vca and panner
more useful that the additional filter types of the a121,
or if 12db filter slope is not sharp enough for your taste. 
my own choice would be the a108, because i dig it's sound
so much.

regarding the a176, sometimes you maybe want to simultaneously
control several modules with only one knob.
or you want to apply a fixed voltage to modules
which don't have any controls, like a132 or a172.
then the a176 is a very useful module.
