At low clock frequency's you start to hear the HSVCO.

To remove this it is suggested that you filter the output.

But (I think, not yet received my A-188-1) you can also subtract the
clock from the output with e.g. an A-138c. 

Are there any advantages/disadvantages between the 2 methods?

This will not work as the clock pulses appear with different levels at the
BBD output (= the audio input signal sampled at each clock pulse). But the
BBD clock signal has a constant level.

using an a138c does not work in this regard, you have to use
a lowpass filter at the output. there is no other way.
