May I just pipe in for a moment and say that's kind of a weird question?

"Mr. President, what are some countries that you think are better than
yours?" "Sir, who are some women you like as much or more than your wife?"
"Mr. Composer, who do you think it would be preferable to hire instead of
you for the gig?" :)

i dont see that as weird. Its like someone asking mr doepfer what makes him tick synth wise or what synths he got into synths and which inspired the creation of the doepfer modular system.

As far as I know, the only other instrument that Dieter Doepfer owns is
an accordion (as far as I know a styrian style). It takes a lot of good
friends and more red wine to get him to play the accordion. The friends
are required as listeners, the red wine is required to make him play and
to make the friends able to stand listening his outstanding technique ;-))

My brother, who is a great keyboard player, started out on accordion.
He had a rock band in the late 60's doing Sam the Sham and other hits
of the time on accordion. His his name on the bellows and costumed up
and all - he was Lord Louie of Lord Louie and the Lads. Very 60's. He
now plays in the Legends of Rock show in Las Vegas and still plays a
mean squeeze box. Here in Seattle is one of the USA's premier
Accordion makers -Petosa's Accordions. He has some MIDI units that
are pretty incredible. The modern Accordion is a great piece of
technology.

Here's a link to one of their MIDI units:

why is every one putting their own theories in? why dont you just let doepfer answer his question?

I disagree, it would be considered weird and very egotistical when
asked what other composers and works you enjoy, all you can say
is "None – I only like and listen to myself!"

Of if the French President is asked what other countries and
cultures he respects and enjoys and all he can say is "None – all
other countries and cultures below the French so I stay away!"

Since you had nothing to do with actually creating your wife – you
better say her!

No own theory: I have seen pictures of Dieter with this accordion, I
know, that there is no electrical musical instrument (and no computer!)
in Dieters private house, and finally because he told it officially in
an interview, I did with him in the mid of the nineties for the german
mag "KEYS", which can be read on http://www.doepfer.de/hist_d.htm

"Dieter Döpfers erster Kontakt mit der Musikwelt versprach auch sein
letzter zu werden: Der Vater machte Akkordeonstunden zur Pflicht und
Sohnemann lernte den Tastenbalg spielen und hassen."

David,

sorry for the late reply. I totally overlooked this message (I assumed it
was a question to the group).

To speak the truth I don't have any of these synths you mentioned for
comparison. I had some synthesizers available in the past but that's a long
time ago (e.g. Roland CMU-800, System 100M, Jupiter 4, Promars, TR-808,
TB-303, Korg MS-20 and SQ-10, Moog Prodigy, Moog Modular, Baumann/BME
modular, Oberheim Four-Voice, PPG Wave 2 and Waveterm A, Dr. Boehm
Sound-Lab, Rhodes Chroma, Hohner string ensemble, several Paia kits, Formant
and some more). Some of them were my own (the cheaper ones), some I had only
for repair or loan (the not affordable ones like the Moog modular,
Waveterm). But in the meantime I have none of these synths left (I'm not a
synth collector...).

Some people blame me for not beeing familiar enough with other current
products ("what do you think about the device X by the manufacturer Y ...").
But I don't have the time to check all the news on this market as I'm very
busy with our own projects.

Best regards
Dieter Doepfer

Florian,

now you have betrayed all my secrets to the group. But you forgot to mention
that I can play only the "Schneewalzer" (snow waltz) on the accordion ...

And that's why I changed to modular syntesizers.
