How to remove springs from joystick?

Re: How to remove springs from joystick?

You can buy spring-less version joysticks for $9 from Bent-tronics and
replace it yourself. That's what I did instead permanently destroying
my factory one. They are exactly the same size and maybe even the same
manufacturer as what's in the Doepfer.

Who knows – maybe some day I may want the spring version back in

once you unscrew the jstick module it's really obvious; and i believe pdf
explains that in more details.
good luck!

I am looking to buy a joystick from doepfer..
I see people want to remove the spring. I assume this is to make it more
like the EMS Synthi style i.i so it wont spring back to the middle
position, so how does it work if you remove the spring on a modular
system mounted in the vertical position, wont the joystick just always
droop to the lower position...???

Hi amnesia

There is one thing, I don't like with the Doepfer Joysticks: The mask
for the movement of the stick is a circle not a square. So you can reach
the maximum value of pot A only if pot B is in center position (and vice
versa). There is no possibility to get the stick really to the corner
with maximum for A and minimum for B.

I ripped the joysticks off an old video game console, which offer this
feature, and I really don't want to miss it.

Hi ???,

there are two possibilities:

1.

Bend very carefully the four metallic tongues of the corresponding
potentiometer that hold the end plate of the potentiometer in question. E.g.
a small screw driver could be used. Pay attention not to break off the
tongues. Then the end plate and the spring can be removed. Re-install the
end plate by bending back the four tongues. This can be done for both or
only one of the two potentiometers of the joystick.

2.

Another possibilitly is to compress the two ends of the spring and cut with
a suitable small cutting pliers without dismantling the potentiometer. In
this case the remnant of the spring remains in the potentiometer.

Pay attention that warranty is lost if the joystick is modified !

That's really an unbelievable price as it's about 1/3 of what we have to pay
for the ALPS joysticks with springs.

Here's some that are even cheaper:

Incredible prices. I assume that these are not ROHS compatible surplus
parts. Otherwise I can't explain these dumping prices. But for DIY it
doesn't matter and I'd buy them if I plan a joystick application.
