A141 trouble

2006-10-06 by erase

Hi, just got a used A141 and there is some trouble with it, just
wondering if there is a quick fix to this. Problem:

it seems to not shut the envelope voltage correctly, the led is there
although I have no gate input and when I drive it with my MCV24 it is
very hard to get it to shut, doing a fast noteon/noteoff simply
leaves it "open". not at all what my A140´s acts like. of course I
have nothing else plugged into it (except adsr out when testing)

thanks

Do the following:
switch off the A-100.
Remove all conections. Definitely remove the MCV24.
Turn all pots of the A-141 to zero (7 o'clock position)
Switch on the A-100
-> Does the LED of the A-141 glow?
If no: The A-141 itself works fine. Continue below at XXX
If yes: plugin a cable into the Gate socket (other end
            hanging loose)
-> Does the LED still glow?
               If yes: A-141 is broken
If no: the A-141 receives some gatesignale via the
bus check out where it is coming from.
Connect the cable to rectangle out of an LFO. The
LED should blink short in the tempo of the LFO.
XXX: If LED doe not glow at first check:
turn Sustain-Pot (NOT the CV-Sustain!) fully clockwise.
-> Does the LED glow now?
If no: A-141 is good, but you had some troubles in gate wiring
              with your MCV24.

Are you able to measure the output voltage of the A-141? There are some
tolerances in the OTA circuit used in the A-141 that may cause some +/-10 mV
offset offset voltage. If it is much more (e.g. 0.5 V or more) the module is
probably defective. If there is a small offset voltage only and you are
familiar with electronics there is a patch to remove the offset: inserting a
Schottky diode (e.g. BAT42) into the output.

Best wishes

If you have nothing in the 'gate' socket and the LED is still on with
the 'R' pot set at 0, then there is a problem with the module, as
(unless there is a newer version than mine, marked 'version 1 1996')
there is no internal connection possible of the gate to the bus
(unlike the A-140), so (on a working module) with no gate signal and
a fast release the envelope should quickly go to zero and the LED
should go out.

If the ICs are socketted (they are on mine), check that they are all
seated properly by giving them a firm push. Also, are there any signs
of obvious modification by the previous owner? - there should be 6
wires between the 2 boards: 5 are bare wire; the sixth is longer and
insulated, marked 'gate' at both ends.
