Re: Fwd: First audio examples of A-188-2

hello jean,

some time ago i had the chance to try the first prototype
of the a188/2. it can indeed be used as a multitap delay,
but the delay times on bbd ic's are quite short, so
you won't get these long multitap cascades that a digital
unit can produce. the strength of the a188/2 is clearly
the generation of chorus and flanger effects,
especially chorus is cool on that device.

the a188/2 is quite versatile, but i wouldn't say that you
can do everything with it. especially the shorter bbd's
(from 128 to 512 stages) can do a few things which are
not possible on the a188/2. also the sound is a bit different,
especially at high feedback settings. it seems that bbd's
with more stages have a harsher sounding feedback than
bbd's with less stages.

regarding the first sound example, i think it gives
a good impression about what this module can do with
just one single waveform. the tiny waveform is getting
quite thick imho.

best wishes

ingo

Hi J

> More demo's please.....this one is kind of ehhh boring.
Try to reproduce the same sound with a simple one-tap BBD. Its impossible.

I don't own the A-188-2 (how should I ;) ), but I own an A/DA STD-1
which is built around the same chip and provides very similar features
as the A-188-2 (see
http://www.adadepot.com/adagear/gearpages/effects/ADA-STD-1.htm). The
main feature of this chip is the really incredible rich, fat chorus or
flanger you can achive with it. Also the great variations of
feedback/delay-time combinations (especially longer delays with the
feedback of the shorte taps) are quite unique.

You have to imagine: this very rich sound is created by a single VCO and
a single modulated BBD-module only.
If you have two A-188-2's will be go crazy while producing stereo
ping-but-not-pong-while-feedback-pang-or-perhaps-pung-later flanger
stuff. ;-)

I promise: once you own this module, you will regret what you wrote
today ;-)

Mmmm.

But is it also possible to use it as a multitap delay witch cv over
clock....

I'm waiting for this module, cause I thought it would be the most versatile
analog delay form all the bbd modules?

AW: [Doepfer_a100] Fwd: First audio examples of A-188-2

2006-10-18 by hardware@doepfer.de

Phil,

it's the very first demo and we wanted to show what is possible with a VCO
(A-110) and LFO only. Of course more complex examples will come in the
future. From my point of view such a simple demo may tell you more about the
possibilities of the module than a very complex demo where you may have
problems to find out the contribution of the module in question. That's why
we also add no other effects (e.g. reverb, delay) to our demos.

If anybody has patch suggestions for additional A-188-2 demos please tell
me. We'll try to make a demo with that patch. Probably next week Ingo will
obtain a second prototype and maybe he will have time to record some
examples as well and publish them on his website.

Best wishes

Totally agree! Highly appreciated approach since it is easier to
imagine possible more complex usage from an simple patch than to
distract the single contributions of individual modules from a more
complicated patch. By the way, I thought the sample quite impressive!

hello list,
from the "fatness" of the chorus i heard from even
this simple a188-2 audio example i am convinced of the
a188-2 quality and i'll buy two of these for my
system!
let alone the flexibiliy and creative power of all
these controls...
best regards,
Bakis.

i wouldn't mind a stuttering pingpong-delay with long delaytimes
coming from one single short bleep, possibly with some variations in
feedback

thanks!

- Feedback from another tap than the audio out is delivering
- Multitap output from all taps, where the shortest tap has
the lowest level. The level becomes higher with the delaytime
of the tap. Creates some reverse sounding effects.
- Two A-188-2 at different clock speeds with cross module
feedback: Will produce reverb kind sounds. If modulated it has to
be filend under "cases of failing drug prevention strategies". ;-)
- Envelopemodulation from high to very low clock rates, with feedback:
   Cloudlike cluster sounds.

You have to go to the office in your country and ask if you can get another
first name :-)
But I cannot promise that this will be sufficient for prototype testing as
the Ingo you are talking about is unique...

That is totally easy! Over all the years you are a good purchaser of all
the good things Mr.Doepfer builds,
on the other hand you try to get out the best of the nice gear and have
a good conversation by giving some or many important hints from the side
of a heavy user as Ingo does!
First buy, then try!
