A112 Wavetable module question

A112 Wavetable module question

2006-10-25 by Michael Wagner

I'm thinking about getting a Wavetable Osc. A friend of mine pointed
out, that I'd need a spare VCO to drive this thing, but when I look at
the manual, I don't see, that it is really necessary to have an
additional VCO.

Am I right with the assumption, that I can play a wavetable at the
pitch I want it to play just by plain CV-control, but it would be of
advantage to have an additional VCO tracking the pitch, so I can
scroll through the table while a note is being played?

It's not that I have no further VCO, but I'd like to be able to use
the two I (will) have separately...

Thanks,
-Michael

hello michael,

you don't need an additional vco to drive the a112.
you can drive the a112 in the same manner as a normal vco,
just use a pitch cv and you're done.

best wishes

ingo

That's great! Thanks for your reply!

Hi Michael,

I think your friend confused the Doepfer Wavetable module with other
popular wave modules like the Blacet Miniwave. Those do require an
additional VCO(sawtooth) to drive it. The Doepfer does not.

    John

Thank you, John. Okay, so I'm probably going to order one of these
modules, since it looks like you can do lots of fun / weird things to
samples. But I do have a few more questions concerning wavetable mode:

I'm completely new to wavetable synthesis, but from what I read about
it, it looks like you can do really interesting sounds with it.
So first of all, I'm not sure wether I understand the principle: So
you have two banks of 256 pages in this module and each page contains
256 samples of one cycle of a waveform, is that right?

If that's right, when I record an incoming audio Signal to a
wavetable, how does it know, how long such a wave is? Do I have to
make sure, that the incoming Signal has the right frequency to fit a
Wave into one page etc.?

Furthermore, are there any useful complete wavetables available
online, so I can dump them into the A112? Or any software to ease the
process of putting together your own wavetables? Because I don't
really see myself, sitting hours in front of a screen, drawing wave
after wave, dumping them into the A112 and the realise, that they
sound bad ;-)

Thank you for any help!
-Michael
