two questions: what is the difference between a graphic eq and a fixed formant filter? and how does one determine the settings if they were trying to emulate a real instrument, vowels, etc... is this something that is already charted, or is there a tried and true method of figuring it out?

  thanks...

AFAIK, the difference is, that the filter frequencies and edge
steepness of the bandpass filters in a graphic eq are fixed, whereas
on a fixed formant filter, you would have control over resonance and
frequency (but no voltage control, so it is a "fixed formant filter",
because you cannot dynamically change the frequency of the bandpass).

As for formant settings: there are lists on the internet where the
formant frequencies of different acoustic instruments are listed. I
don't know an English one, but I think the following document could
help you, even if you don't understand German:

AFAIK any equilizer can amplify and attentuate certain freq.s while a
filter is only capable of the latter. Rgs, Ingo

And the fixed filter bank closes completly when all controls is at
zero. No signal passes.
