joe,
hello ! sorry to be the contrarian here but..........in my doepfer g6 frames,
i have modules from an. sys. and an. sol. - respectively, the comb filter and
the 8x1 sequencer. granted, the loss of 1hp on each side of the an. sys.
module is a bummer - in my case, resulted in losing a total of 4hp ( ie: an
a-180 ) in that row - but it was something i elected to "live with" because i
wanted that module and there was no doepfer equivelent. an. sol. seq.
required a +5vdc adaptor but there was one on the buss it plugged into
anyway, so no big deal for me but something to be aware of. the finish of the
faceplates is different but i wouldn`t go so far to say as "ugly" in terms of
match. then again, this is a deeply personal aesthetics issue so everyone
will have a different viewpoint. as to any subtle differences in systems
philosophy, with only one module each from the a.s.`s, i haven`t seen any
incompatibilities but certainly, i`m no expert. isn`t there someone - david
salter - ? - who has a sizable mixed system ? beyond the 2 a. s.`s, i have a
motm 410, encore u.e.g., blacet/wiard miniwave and blacet time machine ( all
literally screwed into a board and sitting on a doepfer frame ) that i use
with my core doepfer system. these all seem to work well with the doepfer,
too. me, i like the weird, chaotic look and take the zen approach of
accepting each module for what it is and not worrying about appearance.
best,
dave

Dave

I'm sorry, I thought that I was the one being contrarian - a
general personality trait of mine.

I certainly didn't intend to insult anyone's modular system. These are
very personal biases on all of our parts. I was stating an opinion,
realizing that others will disagree with it. When I was posting, I
specifically thought about your system, But, you know, if I remember
correctly, it was the only photo of mixed modules in a single frame,
which is why I worded the statement that I did. You have a very cool
module configuration.

The issue of different overall system "design" is indeed very subtle,
perhaps it only exists in my mind. I wouldn't go so far as to
characterize it as "incompatibility". I was thinking along the lines
of certain A100 modules which seem to be lacking a jack or a knob or a
function, but that's because Doepfer tends to leave things out under
the assumption that you'll fill in the gap with a utility module. So
the A100 is more "distributed" than some other modulars, you need
things like lots of linear mixers and a CV source and a voltage
inverter in your frame to make it go. Somer people find this
frustrating, I consider it the "A100 way". Maybe it's a stretch to
suggest that this would affect a mixed module system significantly,
but it might.
