mini-modular power supply

mini-modular power supply

2007-02-13 by thomasborax

hi there folks.

this may be a dieter only query, but i'll address it to the group in
case there are any suggestions.

i was immediately interested in the a100 "beauty case" when i saw it
posted on the doepfer webpage. however i have a question about the
power supply. i've noticed previously the "mini-bus board power
supply" in the doepfer website, and i have to assume this is intended
to fit into the forthcoming "beauty case". i also noticed that this
provides only 100mA current. many module combos that will fit into
the beauty case will exceed 100mA. for instance, an ext input/env
module, plus 2 normal 8hp filters, plus a dual VCA module will equal
110mA (30mA x 3 =90mA + additional 20mA for the dual vca = 110mA).

i currently have a 36hp plastic case left over from a analogue
solutions "mini modular" i had years ago. the power supply,
unfortunately, is long gone. however, this could be my
perfect "beauty case". but i need a power supply that could feed
different combos of 36HP modules. ideally 200mA would cover every
possible module combo, i think.

do you, dieter, or anyone else have an suggestions, such a bipolar
power supply kits and such that would work. my brief google searches
didn't really pin down any particular kits. obviously something very
bulky would not work in a small case. i think i would be willing to
buy a regular doepfer bus board and cut it down to have 6 or so male
ribbon connectors.

if you tell me that the proposed "beauty case" will accomodate above
100mA i'd be willing to wait it out until you put it on the market.

thanks for info-
tom

I believe a new miniature power supply and bus board is coming out,
for use with DIY projects...I'm waiting for it myself.

The 100mA spec of the A-100 miniature power supply is very precautious and
has primarily to with the max. temperature of the voltage regulators.
Actually the voltage regulators (standard 7812/7912 types) can be used up to
1000mA provided that the temperature does not exceed 70 degrees Celsius. For
this heat sinks have to be used to keep the temperature below this value.
Even the environment has an influence as the air flow around the heat sinks
affects the temperature (e.g. in a small enclosure the heat sinks will heat
up more than in a large enclosure).

At the moment we are about to find out if the miniature power supply is
sufficient for a typical combination of modules in the "beauty case" with
max. 200 mA. As mentioned it's not an electrical but a temperature problem.
We will run a typical combination of modules (incl. 2xA-110 with 70mA each)
for several days and measure the temperature of the heat sinks inside the
"beauty case" now and then. In the worst case we will simply have to use
larger heat sinks to obtain the 200 mA.

Normally the 4 bus connectors of the miniature power supply will be
sufficient for modules mounted to the "beauty case". If actually more than 4
modules have to be installed there is a simple solution: a "double bus
cable" with one bus connector and two module connectors. In this way two
modules can be connected to one bus connector only.

I hope the beauty cases will be available soon. Our case manufacturer is
very busy at the moment. This is why the cases are not yet available (we
expected to have them available end of January).

Best wishes

hi everyone-
thanks for the replies. i think if the current available in the
beauty case can accomodate an a110 plus a few other modules etc, then
that would work fine. i'm very pleased by the thought of having a
little station to swap out mini-patches for live use.

additionally, the DIY power supply is a good option for my
intentions. the heat sink is rather large, but it may fit into my
plastic 36hp case, and i would need to cut down a bus board- not a
problem.

when will the DIY power supplies be available? i look forward to
hearing the results of your tests with the beauty case power supply.

Tom,

I have good news for you. We have a module arrangement with 220 mA current
consumption connected to the A-100 miniature power supply/bus (with larger
heat sinks) for two days and the temperature of the heat sinks is much less
than 70 degrees. The modules are built into a "beauty case". From the next
production series the A-100 miniature power supply/bus will be manufactured
with the new heat sinks to obtain 200mA max. current (to be on the safe side
we will guarantee only 200mA, even if probably 250 mA would work as well).
For existing A-100 miniature power supplies the heat sinks can be replaced
very easily.

We expect the first batch of the DIY power supply #1 early in March. The low
cost version with two 12V wall outlet power supplies will be available about
one month later.

Best wishes

dieter, thanks for the research. i think i'll look into buying the
mini-power supply and swapping out the heat sinks.

Tom,

the next series of the A-100 miniature power supply/bus will be already
equipped with the new heat sinks. We expect the new series about middle of
March 2007. If you can wait until that no heat sink swapping will be
necessary.

Best wishes
