FM Synth

FM Synth

2007-02-22 by Mickey Finn

Cheers- Yesterday I had the chance to mess with a Zerocillator at analog haven.. needless to
say I was underwhelmed. I had grandiose ideas of it's FM and what it would sound like..
hmm.. I'm searching for that classic square wave sound of the CZ101 range of gear. I think
they used a slightly different Phase Distortion type of FM, and that may be why the sound was
so good.. anybody else make a FM module?

Thanks -Coleman.

I have to say that when I recieved my ZO, I was rather unimpressed as
well. I spent days patching messing with it, trying to get what I
considered "my money's worth" out of it. Then little by little it
started to really impress me when I wasn't expecting it, especially as
a modulation source. Now I have these monstrous patches where
practically everything is being controlled (rather, dominated,
manhandled, etc.) by the ZO's multitude of outputs. I was expecting a
DX7, instead I got a Tesla Coil. It's definitely unique and amazing,
it just wasn't (in my personal experience) as immediately gratifying
as most of the other modules I've used.
That's my 2ยข's.

As far as a module similar to the Casio CZ synths, I'm not aware that
such a thing exists, but I would gladly one if it did.

I don't know about the Casio comparison but the Modcan 58B VCDCO rocks for FM!
http://www.modcan.com/bseries/modulesb.html
I got one of these a couple of weeks ago and can't stop playing with it. If you like FM sounds I
don't know how you could possibly be disappointed with this module. It's not cheap but it's
half the price of a ZO! There are demos on the Modcan site and I plan to upload a few of mine
in the next couple of days - check the Yahoo Modcan group.
Bruce really cares about his customers too, like Dieter :-)

Wow!! the demos sound really amazing!! the waves are really different then the VCO's I
currently have in my setup.. Very punchy.. I'll enquire if I can just get a board and try to
make a panel to get it to fit into my euro-rack-

Thanks Phil-

Coleman.
