a135-2: the filters

a135-2: the filters

2007-05-25 by Stu Grimshaw

i've been looking over the other comments on the a135-2. several voices have made very
good arguments for band pass instead of low pass filters. however, the advantage of low
pass filters in this context is that when they're open, they're off, so to speak.

i think if i were planning to send a few drum sounds through the thing, i'd also be hoping
for bpf's. but i sometimes find myself mangling vocals, guitars, drum machines and even a
synth (!) at the same time, for which the a135-2 would be a godsend, but i'd want to have
the option of no filter effect.

and now i'll shut up and leave some bandwidth for somebody else. promise.

you are right. a mode switch would be ideal. or two differently designed
filters for two different purposes in 2 different modules.
Personally, in this modern world of modulars i expect an LPF to have a
certain amount of character, at least more than a BPF. So i would probably
ry and avoid the LPF here, the BPF is more a tool but it should bypass-able
in this application--agreed.
i think we need very similar or two modules here or a switch.... different
filter designs for each would be my pref.

In the meantime we developed a different (more modular) conception of the
filter/mixer/panner with separate sub-modules for the main module (voltage
controlled low pass, VCA, panning unit, mute switch, CV inputs for F/A/P), a
filter converter module, an output module and a CV input expansion module.
The filter converter can be used to add more filter types. For the prototype
we have 16 different filters available which are a sub-set of the A-107
filters. The filter is chosen with a 16-position rotary switch. In addition
a bypass switch (VCF bypass) and a VCF output socket (pre VCA/Panning) are
available.

I publish details (including front panel pictures) in the course of this
week.

Best wishes

The new "modular" suggestion of the A-135-2 is now available on the A-135-2
page of our website.

I also added different versions of the precision adder module. Bakis, a poll
which of the versions the users prefer would be useful. Production could
start as soon as the poll is closed and the results are clear.

Best wishes

hello Dieter,
please, tell me the link for the precision adder
webpage, i do not find it anywhere.
also, should i make a poll about the 3 different
versions of the 135-2 and, also, another poll for the
different versions of the precision adder module?
best regards,
Bakis.

nice! but what filters are we choosing from? original designs? the old
roland/CGS clone by Ken Stone is what I had in mind when I said bandpass
would be nice. Version 1 or 2 might be nice but would like a simple BP/LP
switch if possible, does V.3 use the same CEM as the 107 and Xpander? I'm
personally not that fond of that filter, and sold my Xpander and 107. It's
not bad and may be fine here, just didn't have much character in my opinion.
Personally, making it all vactrol would be ideal! heh! or at least based on
the 101-2 for the filter.

Just trying to compare what we are voting on, still, this seems like a
module that would be tought satisfy most of us with in a modular. So either
make it modular or keep it very simple-- i kinda like the simplicity of V.1
if a lp/bp switch were added. But for the features... right now I'll choose
V.2, but will again ask for a BP/LP option. Maybe it would be clearer with
the jacks moved to the side for each section and add the mode in line with
the knobs and the level pot & mute switch at the top of each section? I
think that would be great and more usable regardless. An LED to indicate
"mute" would be very useful!

best,
phil
