sawing a G6 in half

sawing a G6 in half

2007-05-30 by michaeltritter

I need to shrink a setup for live use to three rows of Eurorack,
leaving a section of a 12U rack free for some other stuff, and all I
have are G6 cases. I really don't want to spend $500 on a G3 to make
it fit correctly.

Am I insane thinking I could hacksaw one of my G6's in half -- of
course disconnecting the second bus board and cables from the power
supply? The G3 is just a PSU2 with one bus board anyway.

Other than the fact that I'll inevitably mortally wound myself on
sharp metal, and the resale value will now be $1, is there something
terribly wrong with such a plan?

Thanks in advance for polite scolding and admonitions.

I was about to offer to trade my G3 for your G6 and pay for shipping both
ways, but then I realized that your system probably runs on 110V and mine
runs on 220V - but you can surely find someone on your side of the pond that
has grown out of their G3 and trade with them.

Cheers,

Silas

I think it's a better (because much cheaper) solution to leave the second
A-100G6 as it is and add only the parts needed for the G3 addition to the
first G6, i.e. an empty 3U frame (available from ProMa), a back panel
A-100B84 and a bus board (both available from us as spare parts).

Provided that your A-100G6 are equipped with A-100PSU2 the supply of the
expanded G6 should be sufficient for the third bus board if not too many
power consuming modules are installed. The bottom cover of the existing
A-100G6 has to be moved to the bottom of the new G3 and the side plates of
both frames (6U + 3U) should be fixed together with an additional plate
unless the G6 and G3 are not permanently mounted into a flightcase or
another enclosure. I recommend these mods only if you are experienced with
electronics (mainly because of the mains voltage at the power supply and
mains inlet) and mechanics because of the required metal work.

Best wishes

You can swap, but keeping your own power supplies (along with most of the
other parts).

With some thought you can see what needs to be swapped easily enough.

I have a load of spare parts that I'm about to get rid of. You could
make a 3U case out of them. You're more than welcome to the for free
(depending on postage). You would need to supply you own power
supply. Let me know if you want these. PS, anyone else wanting
non-Pro-ma, but Doepfer compatible profiles and sides, let me know.
May require a bit of tinkering to fit, but I have used a lot of this
stuff in my old synth cabinet.
