Playing A178 is hard

Playing A178 is hard

2008-01-04 by pfichoux

Dear A100 users,

I'm trying to play a melody with two A178 (Simple Theremin System as
shown on the doepfer home page) and it's really difficult.

I'm disappointed by the exponential behavior of the A178 CV output :
tune changes to fast as I move closer to the antenna.

Do you think it would be better/possible to connect it to the linear
FM input of an A111 high end VCO ?

Best,

Pierre

ALLO...

oui...

I use to play with the A178 quite a lot... let me see...

Did you try to put the CV out of A178 through a A130/131 to be able to adjust the level...
or if you put it through CV2 of A111 you can adjust the level for pitch control...

Pour le.. for the linear input, just try and see...

or maybe I dont understand exactly what you are talking about!

Also, I'm not sure, but maybe on the pcb its possible to modify the sensitivity of the
antenna... not quite sure but maybe...

maybe that can help...

speak french maybe... je suis à Paris là... ciel gris, couvert...

Best,

Alexandre

Re: Playing A178 is hard

I'll try to explain my problem another way :

Suppose you want to play thru a 3 octave range with the simple
theremin (A178 CV out to the A110 CV2 input). You'll need to move 8"
(20 cm) to play notes in the lower octave (C3 to C4), 4" (10 cm) to
play notes in the middle octave (C4 to C5) and 2" (5 cm) for the
highest octave (C5 to C6).

I wish I could play in this 3 octave range with equals spatial moves
(example : 5"=12,5 cm an octave).

I don't think a VCA would fix my problem : A131 would make it worst
(exp x 2) and A130 won't change anything (exp + lin = exp).

Perhaps The A111 linear FM input would do it, but I'd like to read a
user feedback/review, before buying it.

Best,

Pierre

PS : ravi de te rencontrer Alexandre. J'habite près de Paris et j'ai
lancé un post identique sur Audiofanzine. Alors à très bientôt.

Hi Pierre,

I play an Etherwave Pro Theremin from Moog (which is supposedly the
'perfect' Theremin) and I also tried to use the A-178 (I removed them only
recently from my Doepfer-Rack - if someone is interested in them, please let
me know what they would be worth for you to buy) modules; on both you have
the effect that an octave is not exactely linear -

so, in short: the problem you describe is much more prominent with the
Doepfer modules but present in other Theremins also...

Best wishes,
chris

Les gars, les gars!

It can't be linear! Just as the guitar string or the equal tempered keyboard aren't either...
Just imagine how far you would need to run back and forth from your system to play 2-3
octaves! ;P

j'espère que ça vous aide un peu!

alors oui...

so... me in fact, I didnt even really understood the question at first... so my answer was
pure crap... and also never used the theremin in such precise aspect,

but now Gabu... I understand much better with the string example especially as a
guitarist...

merci pour cette explication... c'est toujours bon d'apprendre quelque chose....

Re: Playing A178 is hard

2008-01-06 by pfichoux

Dear Gabu,

Yesterday, I could play 4 octave in a 50 cm space around the antenna.
But playing the higher notes without getting out of tune was almost
impossible.

I practice a lot playing Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" and it requires
2 octave.

A110 CV1 input is 1V/octave. Right ?

So I believe CV2 input can range from 0 to 1V/octave. Volt/Octave
ratio doesn't change unless you turn the CV2 knob.

Yours,

Pierre

you do know the Beach Boys used a Tannerin for this, right?

No I didn't. The score I use mention "Theramin".

I learned something, thank you very much.

Nej, hvor sjovt - skal vi ikke droppe det der engelsk og så skrive
på vores eget sprog i stedet - så er der ingen der fatter hat!

(Well I´m polite - so I´ll translate: "How funny - why not quit

1) Just note that the content messages themselves, log frq. response were all clearely written
in english!
2) the very short french part was meant to be a joke because one assumed I was French while
I'm not at all.
3) It's kinda saddening and a bit shocking that still in 2007... what am I saying, 2008, people
are still getting offended so easily!
But Bakis, it's your group, I'm not the one who will contest or argue on anything there and we
shall all respect your guidelines, which are totally appropriate for such a group. Worry not, no
hard feeling for you on my part!
sincerely

Hi Dave,

The 100M and A-100 systems are quite compatible and should play very
nicely together.

Cheers,

Pierre, I answered to you about this on the audiofanzine website... I will try the A111/A178
as soon as I can... means maybe not before one month possibly...

so maybe someone else could do that before me maybe?

The linear FM input of the A-111 is AC coupled. So this will not work.

I play my theremin with A110 to which I added the linear FM-option as
described in http://www.doepfer.de/a110_tec.htm with DC-coupling (I left
away C11). It is MUCH easier to play for a beginner, but a person who
knows to play theremin complained about the linear response. The
original theremins have a non linear (but not exponential) response.
