First bit cruncher demos (A-189-1)

2008-01-09 by hardware@doepfer.de

If your are interested in the bit cruncher A-189-1: the first demo sounds
are now online. We had a bit problems with the sound card of the new
computer (too much hum during recording). That's why it took such a long
time to publish the demo (Ingo, thank you for your hints).

Best wishes

That sounds awesome !
This module with 188BBD can make a hell noisy combo !
And the CV inputs on the 189 seems rerally interesting, I need to hear
what does a bass when bitcrunched only when the kick slaps or this
kind of patches !!
Keep goin' !
Max.

you to think of them, but me, I'll order it for myself! Thats for sure :)

Really great new module, congratulation Dieter, I'm sure that it's gonna be

Re: First bit cruncher demos (A-189-1)

2008-01-10 by Stu Grimshaw

yes, congratulation are in order, i think.

i must admit, i didn't really see the potential in this idea, since
bit crushing was rather done to death in the 90's, but it really is a
winner - voltage controlled digital synthesis seems to offer many new
approaches. i was particularly impressed by the effect of adding the
vca to the input signal. and bit swapping! a real stroke of inspiration.

i would join david salter in wondering how these thing will develop.
not that i'd be patient enough to wait for the universal ad/da module,
the bit crusher is just too good for that :) but this first taste of
cv-digital is a real appetit whetter!

hut ab!

I have added another example with a VCA between VCO and the signal input of
the A-189-1 Bit cruncher. The sound remembers me a bit to the A-137 wave
multiplier.

Very nice sounding module.

Looking forward to it's release.

Out of interest have you any timelines for other uses of the AD/DA
module? Also will it be possible to have a multifunction module or will
I need to get one of each type?

So far there is no timeline for other derivates of the AD/DA prototype. We
think about a digital, sampled ring modulator and a clocked version of the
A-189-1 (i.e. an external clock input for the sampling rate instead of the
CV). But maybe we can find a way to include all these functions into the
A-189-1 (e.g. one of the 16 modes is digital RM and an additional switch
that switches the SR socket between CV and clock function).

In general we tend to release several modules. It is impossible to use the
same controls and in/outputs for all functions we are about to plan. And I
personally hate these devices with tons of menus and submenus and
subsubmenus and endless parameter adjustments where you never know where you
are and what are the current settings. I prefer a simple manageable control
surface with direct access to as many parameters as possible.

And it would take probably years until such a multifunctional universal
device would be ready.

Best wishes

Hello Dieter,

Thank you for the prompt response.

I agree that menu driven systems are a pain and not really workable.

I only ask as my real estate is getting very limited now, unless I rack
to the ceiling and get a box to stand on :o)
