Doepfer module aesthetics

Doepfer module aesthetics

2008-02-03 by David Westling

The Doepfer machine is as beautiful as the chance meeting of an
umbrella and a sewing machine on a dissecting table...

OK this may be starting a rather pointless discussion,
but who cares how Doepfer modules look? They work.
Some companies may have cooler knobs and creative names
for their modules like Livewire, but the Doepfer stuff
is affordable, does what it is supposed to do and has
the biggest selection of products in the EuroRack format.
And what's so "old fashioned" and great about a modular
being black and white? Lots of great classic modulars
used other colors in the panel designs. I don't know
I don't want to offend any one but owning a small
modular set up made up of mostly Doepfer modules
has afforded me a wonderful sonic pallet to work
from for my music. Just some thoughts on the matter....

i agree with both sides. the doepfer modules aren't pretty, but those
who want vintage knobs can add vintage knobs. i'd sooner spend the
money on features.

and if you wanna call your waveshaper an
orgone-confabulation-dandifier then you go right ahead and do it :)

I like the look of doepfer modules and knobs. Doepfer has a bauhaus vibe to it. Stiff like
test equipment, not cliche 60's scifi like livewire. (no diss towards livewire)

I'm suprised at this topic,

Honestly agreeing with all, still i must say that they are analog modules, high quality and extremely high quality built as i have assessed them personally and cannot believe the attention to detail for the prices (ie solders perfect etc) ; and the sound, well, thats a whole new paragraph..!

Aesthetically, if one was to require a new range of the "Same" modules in colors...well, the first issue is demand vs production costs etc...

If a custom design is what somebody wishes for, consider having the panels remade via a laser cut service and electroplating them ... based on original specifications. Probably have to speak to dieter if you would have any queries regarding your warranty after this kind of modification.

Then you would have true customs :) and they would only cost you around another %100 of the original price; but they'd look cool......

But what i love about these modules the most is they don't try to sell them with gimmicks or "amazing new color panels"! (Not a dis to other brands, just a fact.) there audio modules, and at a live gig you would only notice the l.e.d's anyway from off stage..

Or even consider uv reactive ts cables to patch with.... but panel colors....
I would vote for them but i don't know about every user.

And then if they did make new colors they would probably loose their identity.

Right now doepfer mod's are neat and do their job well.

But i wouldnt loose any sleep over it ... :)

Oh yeah this did create a pointless discussion :O

I know this its my first post and its a bit choppy;
but its a monday morning for me :)

maybe i should get that coffee...

Cheers

I'm not :-)

if I look around me the ugliest piece of gear right now must be the
moogerfooger murf. I took off the little aluminium knobs, otherwise they
would have fallen of anyway, unbelievable...

I think Doepfer panels look nice and professional when mounted in
A100P suitcase.

Some of the other brands modules look really homemade in comparison
