"Mega" Euro Rack planner nearing completion

2008-03-16 by modularplanner

Hi all,

I've had quite a few requests to implement the other Euro Rack
manufacturers into my modular planner. Here is taster of whats to
come. It's only in a "Monster Case" version at the moment, I will be
creating a Standard 12U version soon.

http://mega.modularplanner.co.uk/

Manufacturers working so far are:
Doepfer
Analogue Systems
Analogue Solutions
Plan B

I'll be putting Cwejman in soon as I have images for them. The others
I am awaiting graphics from the manufacturers.

All the best
Andy

It does snap to the nearest 1HP at the moment, but I know what you
mean, modules overlapping. Yeah this is a kind of collision detection
and its something I want to put in but I've not had time to get me
head around it.

For the moment though once you get to used to dragging and dropping
then you can have one hand on the cursor keys for fine 1HP control.

Very cool, Andrew !

You plan to have vertical snap (module-side to module-side)
implemented as well ?

Collision detection in Flash is a tad awkward, yes.
You working in AS 3 ?

As another suggestion, if I may, it would be nice to have some kind of
[optional] textual overview of currently 'installed' modules. It can
get a bit wieldy with such amount of modules. Perhaps a semi-
transparent overlay, or a pull-up window thingie with just the name of
the modules so I can see in one quick glance what's installed..., or
something similar ?

Anyway, awesome job !

Re: "Mega" Euro Rack planner nearing completion

I have the rear mounted psu version of the Doepfer Portable case
myself, you know i never noticed the 1HP gap before now :). I will add
more cases in when I can. I notice Analogue Solutions and Systems both
have their own cases, besides Doepfer are there any others, excluding
ones bigger than the monster case?

The version I did for Doepfer is standalone with no need for the
database so it can be done if required but yeah but will take some
time, no idea how much to charge though. If you want to email me with
your requirements I'll see what can be done.

As it is now there is current draw listed and calculated, but only if
it is supplied on the manufacturers website where i got the data from.

A Doepher Portable cabinet version would be nice too. They have the
extra 1HP panels on the ends of the rows and the front mounted power
supply for they version. I know I'm being lazy here - I can use what
you've made but it still would be cool. A stand-alone no net needed
version would be great of course too. I would pay for one that would
let you choose from the different cabinets offered by the different
manufacturers, different modules from them, and calculate current draw
for the different supplies. That would be such a big project that it
would have to be paid for - unless you could charge a small fee to the
manufacturers to participate (and they could provide all the data..

I thought I'd miss someone, or probably a few out there :)

Sure I can add them, do you have front panel images in a Vector Format
like Illustrator or Corel Draw? This type is preferred so users can
zoom in and maintain clarity. Otherwise nice hires well lit pictures
will suffice but as you can see things get pixalated on zoom :(.

Also if you have current draw per module and distributer prices (I can
search for prices if you want).

There is no difference between the standard 19" frame and the suitcase
version with one exception: if the mains inlet is located at the front side
8 HP are (ab)used for that. The additional 1 HP was only for the first
production series of the suitcases and is no longer needed as the suitcases
have now 84 HP too. Only the first series were 85 HP.

Thanks Dieter - both mine must be first generation units. Are the
units outer dimensions changed? If I set them next to mine would they
be smaller? No problem there, just curious since I will be buying a
third case soon. I guess the only difference would be the lids would
be different from each other, something easily dealt with.

It's a long time ago that we manufactured the suitcase version with 85 HP.
From the theory the new version should be ~5 mm less.

The reason for the 85 HP was that in the standard frames rails with 85 HP
are used but on each side 1/2 HP is covered by the mouting angle which
results in 84 HP useable width. When we started the suitcases we used the
same 85 HP rails to ease the stock holding. And for these suitcases the
additional 1 HP blind panel was required. In the meantime the frames (both
the standard cases and the suitcases) are manufactured by an external
company and they shorten the rails for the suitcases to the required 84 HP.

Best wishes
Dieter Doepfer

Standard version has now been added to fit 1280 x 1024 minimum. Press
F11 in your browser to maximise screen area.

I've also added tooltips over the modules to display make, model and
quantity installed, helpful when the rack starts filling up on the
monster version especially.

Nice work, though recent changes appear to have broken it under
Safari. It used to work there, but now it gives a bunch of errors
while loading, and none of the modules in the right panel load. Still

Works fine on my Mac, with the newest Safari 3.1.
Those error messages I had before as well... I assume those are
missing data for modules or something...
