Hello,

I used the A100 regularly for free improv for few years now. I dont have a keyboard nor
controller... I have joysticks and theremins but didnt use them that much in fact. I'm very
happy about the new module 164-1 and with any module with toggle switch as they are
very practical for me in a live situation

otherwise, I just try to create a patch as versatile as possible... and I think I understand
what you mean with "sub sections"... but... well... yeah, you just have to go for what is
more practical for you... like having four very different sounds in a mixer for example...

Best,

A

Live setups for free improvisation

2008-03-17 by Korhan Erel

Hi,

I would like to thank all of you who have answered my questions on
processing of live instruments with Doepfer modules. I'd like to
expand on this with another question:

Has anyone here use modular systems in free improvisation? To this
day, I have been using an Audiomulch + Kaosspad + Joystick setup for
performances, but would like to go for an analog setup. I know the
answers for sound processing modules. Now I'd like your opinion on
modules essential for instrument design. My prerequisites are:

- full control over the instrument
- the instrument needs to have several sub-sections that have separate
tasks (sound processing, sound generation). I'd like to have at least
two complex sub-sections
- the instrument should require no or minimum repatching on stage

I'd like you to focus on CV generation/modulation modules, but any
other suggestions are also welcome, of course.

Thanks!

Korhan

Hi!

Thanks for the reply. Let me clarify what I mean by subsections:

I currently have 1 Quad LFO, 1 Wasp Filter, 1 Waveform Processor (A-116), 1
Dual VCA, 1 Max/Min and 1 Ext. Input (+ one multiples module). I plan to add
a BBD module, a A-137-1, a PLL, A-148 Dual S&H / T&H, A-171 VC Slew Limiter,
A-175 Dual Inverter modules. I would like to have sub-sections consisting of
several modules that can create playable sounds or do sound processing.
However, I do not want a large modular system. The setup above includes 12
modules and I'd like to keep it that way. However, I am open to suggestions.
For example, I think I should go for a joystick module. The A-164-1 is also
a nice one, but with this setup, I do not see anything controllable by gate
signals (my eyes are not really trained to see these things by the way).

Summary: I seek a system that consists of a minimum number of modules
possible to allow me to design 3-4 processes and have access to them
simultaneously with no or little patching on stage.

Thanks!

Korhan

The S&H/T&H needs some kind of trigger/gate. You may get it from the
LFOS, but doing it manually is much closer to the real musical development.
Also the VC-Slewlimiter, can use it (switch portamento on/off).
The VCA can use a gate as organ like envelope.
The gate through the slew limiter is a Attack/Release Envelope.

I do live improvisation sound (originating from the A100) and live
processing (originating from something else and beeing processed in the
A100).
What you definitely need for processing external signals is a crossfader
function. Without that you cannot enable/disable the processing without
noticable breaks.
You do not have to use a crossfader module necessarily. You also may use
several multiples and a mixer at the output (either an A-100 mix modul
or an external mixer).
I built some very simple crossfaders for my own. But meanwhile I prefer
especially to have multiple outputs on each soundprocessing module. So
you can setup a second connection to another module (or mixer channel).
The final crossfading usually can be done by the input controls of the
corresponding module or mixer channel.

Hey Korhan,

I've been using a portion of my a100 system for live free improvisations. I have a suitcase
filled with modules. I usually make two patches before the improv. session starts. I use a A-
138 mixer to switch between patches. I use a Roland footpedal to control the main level of
my output. During the performance I also mainly change my patches and/or create a third or
fourth patch. It's mentally quitte tiresome but it can be very rewarding..

Have fun!

I'd love to hear the work, any of this online?

Hi!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Florian, thanks for pointing me at the right direction about gate signals.
You're right, a manually triggered gate would work in my setup. The
crossfader I don't need that much as I will be processing live instruments -
I'll probably send the instrument signal to the modules via an aux send on
the mixer (or several signals from the computer via the sound interface). On
the other hand, I'm sure a crossfader could be used rather creatively.

Heinrich, the idea of repatching is actually quite exciting, but as I will
be performing with other musicians, I'd like to keep my attention on them
rather than fiddling with small patch leads. However, I would definitely
consider starting with a patch and ending with another patch if I get to
improvise solo. And yes, I would also love to hear some of your
improvisations!

So any other suggestions on this?
