AS/Doepfer module experiences

AS/Doepfer module experiences

2002-05-16 by Adam Burr

I'm considering purchasing a rack of modules from both Doepfer and Analog
Systems and I was hoping to hear if anyone had experienced any problems
that I should know about before I buy them:

Doepfer
-------
A-116 Waveform Processor
A-118 Noise
A-120 24dB Low Pass
A-123 24dB High Pass
A-131 Exp. VCA
A-132 Dual Linear VCA
A-138 Mixer
A-140 ADSR
A-180 Multiple

Analog Systems
--------------
RS30 Frequency And Envelope Follower
RS70 Pre-Amp/Inverter/Slew
RS80 VC LFO
RS95 VCO With Sine Wave
RS220 Joystick
RS240 Frequency Shifter
RS310 Reverb/Chorus

I would love to hear about any experiences you have had with these modules.
Are there any other groups or lists where I might get useful information on
them? If you would like to see an image of the proposed system look at:

Thanks in advance.

Adam.

I have a lot of the modules you're considering. I have to agree with
another post that the uses of the A-132 aren't necessarily
overwhelming, at least for me. Generally something more full-
featured is necessary. I'd sell you mine without regrets.

The A-116 waveform processor is excellent, I truly love the -24 dB
highpass filter, and you obviously can't go wrong with the noise
module.

As for the AS stuff, I have the RS30 follower and its pitch-following
isn't terribly tight -- its uses are more abstract, e.g. with
followed unpitched sounds controlling a VCO. The AS VCOs are truly
great -- much warmer and fatter than the Doepfer A-111s. That said,
they'd be perfect if they had a fine-tune knob and pots for
attenuating pulse-width CVs. And I happen to love the sound of the A-
111s. I want more of both.

hmmm... make sure you have the spacing right so it all fits, the AS stuff
throws stuff off a bit. note: the Analog Solutions(not sys) modules matches
the doepfer racks.

i'd get an envelope of some sort A-142 or A-140 and drop the 131vca, since
you have the 134.
best,
phil

My humble opinion:

The Analog Systems RS-118 multi-mode filter is sonically
superior to the Doepfer filters. I would go that route - I just did
myself (got 3).

The Analog System's Reverb/Chorus is an interesting unit - but
don't get it if you are expecting classic reverb and chorus effects.
It has it's own personality, that's for sure. Again, it sounds great,
but it's reverb on a bad hair day and very spicey chorus. It can
also make some interesting noise with nothing plugged into it.

While not on your list, this is true of the Analog Systems Comb
Filter being billed as a flanger/phasor. I guess it does fpanging
and phasing, but you'll have to but a footnote there, cause it sure
doesn't sound like it to me. I had one and returned it. Just didn't
see any love in that one. Sounds like an Adrian Belew module -
anything going into it sounds like Ade coming out.

Also, (I may be wrong with this), but I believe that the Analog
System's Frequency Shifter, which I have not heard but it's
supposed to be terrific, will want two audio-range sources into it.
I only see one VCO on your list - you are getting more than one,
yes?
