bbd and mini case problem - won't work?

bbd and mini case problem - won't work?

2008-08-18 by Carlos

I have a bbd module ( 4096 stages) I tried putting it in a mini
case(beauty case) witha wave multiplier as they fit perfectly
together in there but it doesn't seem to work correctly.

Basically the clock is not working and it seems to be stuck at a
really long delay, and can only get noise out of it instead of the
usual thick delay (but can still mix with initial signal)

I put it back on my rack and it went to working perfectly.

is there a reason/limitation for this module that won't allow it to
work well in the mini case?

or is it simply that when those two modules are together they suck way
too much current for the mini case supply?

C.

Hello Carlos,
I don't think the current can be the problem.
The 188-1 (4096) takes 80mA and the A137 takes 40mA.
That is 120 mA, well within the range of 200mA that the minicase powersupply
delivers...

Can't think what else it could be. like I said works perfectly when I
put it back into the rack.

going to try the bbd on its own in the mini case later tonight see if
it works properly, if it does then it will be safe to say than either
the mini case current rating or some of the modules rating is wrong.
if it doesn't then there might be something else that prevents the bbd
module from working in the mini-case...

Carlos, does the other module (wave mult) work properly when placed in the rack? Perhaps that module is damaged and overdrawing the mini case supply causing the BBD not not function.

the wave multiplier works fine. but it is before the bbd in the power
line so yeah might be sucking it up somehow. more tonight when I test
the bbd on its own.

anyone else has a bbd with any other module combination in their mini
case?

Re: bbd and mini case problem - won't work?

2008-08-20 by Carlos

alright, the bbd worked fine int he beauty case on its own or with
other modules other than the wave multiplier.

the Wave Multiplier also works fine on its own....

so either the current draw value for the wave multiplier is wrong, or
there is something that makes the combination of this two modules in
the same case bad.

I'll check this combo with one of our minicases.

Best wishes
Dieter Doepfer

P.S. From the next series of Minicases the width will be increased a bit.
The new Minicases will have 32HP (instead of 28 HP). The power supply will
remain unchanged, i.e. the miniature power supply with 4 bus connectors and
max. 200 mA is used.

Hey Doepfer, did you ever check the combo to see if there is indeed a
problem?

also when are the new size mini cased expected?

thanks!

I have checked the combo and they work both - but with one mechanical
problem. It's impossible to install both modules at the same time because of
the depth of the modules (so I tested the modules connected to the mini case
but not mounted). The depth of the A-137 is 65 mm, the depth of the A-188-1
is 60 mm. But the useable depth of the mini case is only 50 mm in the left
area (as specified on our web site). In the left area the heat sinks of the
power supply prevent the mechanical assembly of the A-137 or A-188-1. You
probably own the old version of the mini case with the small heat sinks.
Otherwise you would not have been able to install both modules.

As the old version of the mini case had only 100 mA available this may be
the reason of your problems. The A-137 has 40mA, the A-188-1 80mA. That's
120mA altogether.

> also when are the new size mini cased expected?

They are already available (from Doepfer, Germany). But you have to ask the
dealer/representative in your country if they have the new version with 32HP
already in stock.

Best wishes
Dieter Doepfer
