two basic questions

two basic questions

2009-01-18 by Giles

Hi,

I just purchased my first modules and a rack used and I'm trying to
figure a couple of things out. I figured you guys could answer the
questions pretty easily.

1. The modules all seem to have a 60hz hum on output. It's low level,
but it's there. I haven't done much trouble shooting yet, Just tried a
different outlet. The fact that it's all modules that I tried, (2
mixers and a filter), makes me thing there might be a power supply
issue. Is there a way to confirm this with a basic multimeter?

2. I have a kenton Prosolo Midi to CV Converter. I can't figure out
where the gate should go. I have a Livewire AFG oscillator, and I
can't find a gate input anywhere on any of my modules. From what I
read it should get it off the bus, but I have no idea how to get it to
the bus. Right now I have long sustaining notes, which is cool, but
not very flexible.

Thanks,

Giles

Hi Giles,

no idea about the hum, but the gate would normally go into an envelope generator.

Ahh...It seems so obvious now. I don't know how I missed that.

Thanks,

Giles

does the hum also appear if you don't connect the A100 to any other
equipment (no audio connection, no midi connction) and the connect a
headphone to the output of the audiomodules?

Wouldn't he call it a "50Hz" hum, if he lived in the US...?

Re: two basic questions

Yes, I'm in the US. It's a G6 Rack.

It looks like a grounding problem. I put a ground lift on the Doepfer and it's working
great now. probably not the best long term solution, but it's working for now.

Thanks for your help guys.

Try an Ebtech Hum Eliminator. It's a pair of isolation transformers with 1/4" jacks for i/o. I keep one in my gig bag for live shows, and it has solved 90% of the hum issues I've encountered.

Isn't that just what we normally call a DI box?

No impedance change. The transformers are 1:1.
