Great photos. The system is amazing. I thought I was a Doepfer
pervert, but you've got me doubled. Glorious.

Wow, Bakis.
This thing is amazing! 20 rows of modules, you must be crazy. What a wall.

Very nice system. I´m jealous ;-)

bakis really had a wonderful style, don't you think? He's saying some
very biting things that all of us internet junkies need to think
about, yet he refers only to himself so no one can be offended :0

You've got an amazing A100 system, bakis. You've put my latest photo
to shame. Did you get the MCV24 and make your system polyphonic yet?

Joe

Hi Bakis,

> i really must get out more...
I know your problem, as I am writing a dissertation about modular synths at
the moment, which keeps me staying at home all day long...
It´s more than 30°C out there, but I have to sit in front of my PC. I´d
rather like to create sounds with my system instead writing about it.

Paul

Yep, might be possible. Bakis, how many modules (and patchcords) do you possess?

hi joe,
yes i received my mcv24 the very next day after i took
these photos...also,i have filled some empty spaces in
these 20 rows with some new modules:3 a180's,3
a181's,a116,a126.so,now,these 20 rows are completely
filled...
you see...i need all these a181's because i can
connect my a100 to my MS-synths and my mixer, easier
this way.(and, also, there are some 6u racks that don't
have any power left for more modules, except
multiples...)
it really doesn't matter how big your a100 system
is...BUT i salute all the members who can use their
a100 system creativily!and i know that in this group
there are many members that KNOW A LOT(!!!)about
modular synthesis...and this is the most
important,right?
bakis.

If it is Zimmer's, it's grown a lot since this picture was taken:

http://www.synthfool.com/images/zimdoeplo.jpg

12 rows there, plus an MAQ. Something more like 36 rows in the picture
Peter posted to the site. For some reason I'd assumed the 36-row beast
was actually at Doepfer HQ, but yes, that may be someone's workaday
synth. Phenomenal.

Peter, do you know whose synth that is?

hi list,
this list of hans zimmer's synths must not be
100%accurate..,.as far as i know from dieter ,hans
zimmer has a bigger doepfer a100 system than mine, and
my a100 has more than 160 modules...so?he can't have
only(!!!)129 a100 modules...
bakis.

You may be right, but the gear list is taken from his firm's (Media
Ventures) website. The number of modules listed also agrees with the
photo by his tech Kevin Lightner's photo on Synthfool.

I'd be very curious to know the current size of Zimmer's Doepfer and the
module rundown (and why a guy with insanely huge Moog, Roland, and
Polyfusion modulars assembles a huge Doepfer as well.)

I'll go out on a limb here and
guess that HZ has the same child-
like fascination with gear like
the rest of us.

What about doepfer's own A-112 sampler module, isn't this digital
and still cheap?

Perhaps people who are interested in a DCO should look at this
module first, very powerful module and worth its money!
Also, its a Wavetable VCO with voltage controllable Pitch as
Analogue Solutions.

Re: If anyone cares about graphic VCOs or DCOs

2002-08-01 by jmaddocks1975

but 8-bit is fine for waveforms.

I agree a DCO would be an excellent module and one I would buy
straight away. I really like the DCO in my CZ-1000 (everything else
on the synth is boring but the DCO's are very unique) but the A-112
can be an excellent oscillator!
No need to limit it to sampling beats are vocals, use it for new
waveforms. Believe me its far better than you imagine. It took me a
long time to buy one because I wasn't sure it could offer anything
new but I love it.

The module he means is Analoge Solutions 'VCO-WT Wavetable VCO'

I agree that a DCO should be cheap to make, how cheap are soundcards
these days??

If anyone cares about graphic VCOs or DCOs

2002-08-01 by Andreas Lindholm

I thought I should drop you a line to inform you very briefly that I have
been in contact with Dieter Doepfer himself. He did respond in quite some
depth to my questions and proposals to the making of a graphic oscillator
digital or pure analog. To sum things up he thinks a DCO with vc control
will be very expensive (more than an a111) and a graphical oscillator is
according to him of little use anyway since it doesn't sound as fantastic as
I am others seem to believe.

As for improovements of the A110 and A111 I got very polite responses that
they don't plan anything like that and consider the VCOs as perfect as they
need to be. So the A200 line seems out of the question.

I don't urge anybody to pest Doepfer about these things, but if you feel
strongly about it you could drop a line of your own. For my own part I have
gotten all the answers I needed. It is always good to know the why's and why
not's about things like theese.

Of course he does.

My question is more that given that has 334 modules of Roland and Moog
-- which I'm assuming is functional -- I suspect he assembled the
Doepfer for some more specialized purpose, and I wonder what it was.

It would also be interesting to know if he uses the Doepfer in
preference to the other modulars.

Well, I am not sold on the 8-bit idea. Sure it can be fun to have a sample
degraded to 8bits, but I really think that 16 bit 44khz is a reasonable
standard for sound. Otherwise the a-112 seems like a good module.

Ridiculous, I wouldn't use such strong words, but with prices dropping on
PCs and stuff I do agree that it seems strange.
I couldn't find any such module on AS homepage, do you know the number of
it?

That´s exactly it. http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~concuss/concussor/vco-wt.htm
I had the chance to play it on the ASol Vostok Matrixsynth last weekend. Wonderful module, i prefer it to the A-112. Just look at this bubble-display... :-)

The module he means is Analoge Solutions 'VCO-WT Wavetable VCO'

I agree that a DCO should be cheap to make, how cheap are soundcards
  these days??

How would we go about getting Zimmer to put in a guest appearance
in the A100 Group Chat Room?

There's some other artists who use an A100 who it would fun to hear
from as well.

Joe

(I'll bet bakis could convince Dieter to try and pursuade them.)

hi list,
the a112 it's not just a sampler,it a wavetable
oscillator!!!you can load wavs to it and it then can
play then in 256 parts(their order is voltage
controlled!)and the sample-playback rate is voltage
controlled.you can make wavetables in the computer and
then load them to the a112.so,it is a wavetable
osc.AND an 8-bit sampler.i have three of them and use
them for low-fi sounds and effects.if you use the
lo-fi delay mode you can make some very good
soundscapes with it too...you can use it in "monitor"
mode as a bit decimator module(like on the nord
modular module) and pass all your a100 sounds thru it
to make them sound really destroyed!very good!
bakis.

Believe it or not (and check with Lightener on this one) I helped
Lightener for a few hours (VERY minor... actually, inconsequential
bit of work on my part really) on the power rails for Zimmer's Moog
when it was parked next door to Media Ventures.

We (Lightener and I) used to "test" the Moog and the Roland for more
hours than would be considered healthy.

But that was about 11 years ago, and I guess a lot of things change.
Christ, I've grown old.

Regards,
Kevin

Damn you, Bakis. I'm an old PPG fanatic (as well as Waldorf freak),
and NEED wavetable oscillators.

In short, you've just cost me money, as I HAD to order an A112 after
reading your message. I was hesitating until now.

Damn you (in the best possible way).

Regards,
Kevin
