iPad

I was thinking that the forthcoming "iPad" from Apple could be used as
an instrument similar to Doepfer's ribbon controller or the Haken
Continuum. One would just need to program the right app. It would be
great if a midi output cable could be created to go along with it. I
know there are currently some synthesizer and sequencer apps for the
iPhone, but I don't know if any has taken advantage of continuum-like
effects. The iPad would be great for this as it would be a much
bigger playing area.

I don't think there is even a USB port on iPad. How would you output it?

And certainly it would be cheaper to buy touchscreen and doepfer MIDI Electronics, than expensive and probably useless otherwise device.

There's a pigtail cable that gives you a USB port.

Development for the iPad will be TIGHTLY controlled by Apple, and remember,
it's basically just a huge iPhone. It does _not_ multitask.

Cheaper to buy a touchscreen? Can you provide evidence?

A touch screen would probably work out cheaper, however the iPad is a
multi touch screen which with OSC will provide a better experience IMHO

Even kaosspad costs less that iPad, plus there are plenty of OEM touchscreen manufacturers that are definitely cheaper that iPad, cause they come with no software and smug cloud :) I was talking about this.

only 1 point as opposed to the multitouch iPhone (or iPad?)

I use the iTouchMIDI suite of programs - http://www.itouchmidi.com/ - and they have a Mackie Control Universal emulator that works fine with Ableton and Logic etc. They also do the standard Keyboard and Pad and Kaos Pad emulations too, They should work straight out of the gate with the iPad but I want to see what people write for the iPads larger surface. I assure you there will be plenty of music apps. All will connect to a host machine via wireless though which is cool for me. Leave the heavy lifting (and Audio interfaces) for the host machine and give me a control surface with NO wires. You will see Lemur clones and Tenori-on clones and APC-40 clones in no time I'm sure.
