Request for Advice

2002-08-12 by ethanzer0

Hello,

I own a A-100BS Suitcase and have
been very pleased with it. I am
about to buy another batch of
modules and find myself having a
little trouble deciding what to
purchase. I know I am going with
a G6 frame, but, other than that
I can't decide. Should I get any
A-111s? Are they worth it? How
about the A-112? I find my self
leaning more toward CV and CV
processing stuff rather than
oscillators or other sound sources.

Can anybody suggest what they would do
to compliment an A100BS Suitcase?

Thanks,

Ethan

Well, to put it my way, the a110s are useless to me, the a111 are okey, but
the Analog Systems 95 VCOs are the best for a doepfer rack.

Re: Request for Advice

2002-08-12 by buechlerjoe

The way my mind works, there's three kinds of modules that you add
to your "shopping list" as you're going along:

Scale-up modules: more VCOs, VCFs, ADSRs, LFOs. I'd be adding a
third oscillator to fatten up the sound and get rid of phase
cancellation if I were you, A110, 111, 112, take yer pick.
Likewise, a third ADSR would give you dedicated VCO, VCF and VCA
envelopes when you need them, and if you make the third envelope an
A141 you'll have voltage control in the bargain. A second VCA provides
all sorts of options - AM sidebands, panning, midi volume, and patch
layering to name a few. And you just can't have too many LFOs.
After you get a nice big fat "voice", the next scale-up is to a
second complete voice for duophonic work, or for "patch memory".

Eat-your-vegetables modules: My rule of thumb would be one A180
multiples and one A138a linear mixer, smack in the middle of each
row for "fan-in" and "fan-out". An A132. One A175 invertor and one
A176 CV source, a pain to convince yourself to buy, but once you have
them you'll be glad you don't have to kludge these functions anymore.

Needed and wanted modules: Every time I'm was in the middle of a patch
and discovered that I needed the Axxx to make that patch work, I added
it to the shopping list. Likewise, the other modules mentioned in each
of the Doepfer user's manual are usually there for a reason, they tend
to be useful in conjunction with the module being described. This
category also includes the modules that you lust for. The A119, A136,
A155/156, A191 are some of my favorites, but everyone is different on
this topic.

I used to have about 50% audio modules and 50% CV modules, but my A155
sequencer row changed that proportion to more like 40% and 60%. I
wonder what other folks' breakout is like?

What makes this AS-95 VCO so desirable
over the other choices?

Thanks again,

Would you choose the A142 over the
A141 if you had the choice? And how
about the A147 over the A145?

That is probably the best advice I
have heard to date - Thanks!

These are high on my list right now
too.

Thanks again for your valuable input!

Ethan,

The A191 is one of the more esoteric "must have" modules. The MIDI
sync'ed LFO is something I value most of all about the module. You
need this module.

Joe got it 100% correct in his assesment. Mult's and mixers are
ALWAYS in short supply, and something you should seriously consider
purchasing LOTS of.

'Nuff said.

Re: Request for Advice

hi ethan,

first off it's a discrete design, i.e no curtis chips. second, it has
variable vc of the waveshapes, think EMS vcs3 only with vc for very
animated sounds. third, the sync input behaves differently from
doepfer. fourth, the rs95 responds linearly to input control voltages
from -10 to +10 volts, giving you a useful range of about 16 octaves.

it has it's own sound just like the A111 has a curtis like flavour. i
like both of them. i also like 2 or more a110's into a mixer and
having the lowest setting on the range, detuned and sometimes fine
detuned and having them controlled by slow envelopes and lfo's to
create mixed voltages for use as a modulation source on an other
source. i mean the possibilities are endless, it's like a blank
canvas, you just keep adding 'til it's brilliant or rubbish at which
point you start all over again.

the brilliance of a modular synth is not the amount of sources you
have but the amount of control voltage generators, modifiers and
processors you possess. the more the better. also remember that any
vc input can be automated by another source in conjunction with the
use of a vca and adding a gate delay for more controlled animations
of the sound.

now what the A100 really needs is a vc quadrature osc and a vc delay
module with every vc this and that as well as a range from 0000
milliseconds to 2 or 4 seconds, with a 4 digit display a la Korg
SDD3000 or Lexicon PCM 42 so you can dial in a precise time, positive
and negative feedback, and some type of filter to emulate tape
delays, sync input for syncing to midi or dividied clocks and a range
switch to allow for a microsecond range. this will allow you to do
analogue modelling which would definitely help the modular synthesist
in developing new sounds and textures that are not available to us
now. oh well, the last paragraph is one of my pipe dreams that hopes
it becomes someday a reality. ;)

hi ethan,

if it possible, get both. please read the individual manuals for both
of these modules to get a better understanding. the A141 is useful
for realtime (velocity from midi from keyboard etc.) or voltage
controlled manipulations(from a sequencer or lfo). the A142 is useful
for fast and percussive style envelopes with only one vc parameter,
the decay. both have their prescribed uses and can be used in many
different ways.

i totally agree with Joe Buechler here, but instead of using the
A180 mult, i would replace it with the A. Solutions MX224 Mixer /
Inverter / Buffer. this a far more useful module, imho. The MX224 is
a 2 input mixer/inverter/buffer. It can mix audio, control voltages
and gates with multiple normal and inverted outputs. Ideal for
splitting signals with no signal drop. check out the url below,

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~concuss/concussor/mx224.htm

a linear mixer is very useful for mixing multiple voltages to a
source. i know mixers don't produce sounds, but they serve a
specific function which is very much needed in your basic voice
setup. if you want, you could use the A135 for having voltage control
of the mixing. to give you a better idea, look at almost any Roland
analogue synth they have a mixer to mix the waveforms of the osc's
before the filter input and a mixer for the frequency of the filter.
look at an SH101 it two mixers, one for the ramp, pulse, suboctaves
and noise and one mixer for the envelope, one lfo mod and one for
keyboard tracking. and whose says you can't have one for your osc's
section. now can you imagine the SH101 without them, i say you would
have a very basic instrument with little control.

another very helpful addition to this middle function cluster would
be to add an A130 linear vca to have voltage control of any function
that has a vc input, i.e. enveloped modulations etc. while an extra
A140 certainly won't do you any harm.

the A145 and A147 are both very useful in different ways, my
suggesttion is to have both of them, that way you could cover all the
bases which one will have and the other won't.

>
> > The A119, A136, A155/156, A191 are
> > some of my favorites, but everyone

i agree here as well, a couple of additions that would be very useful
would be the A162 dual trigger delay and the A171 vc slew or the
A129/3 vocoder slew limiter and A-129 /4 (Slew Limiter Controller),
if you need a bunch of them. i would also throw in the A151, A160/161
and A166 for more logic functions to go with with your A155.

once you have all the sources (osc's, filters and sound shaping
modules) in your system together, it's time to build up your control
voltage generators, modifiers and processors for more animated and
controlled sounds and textures.

good luck,
RM

I have three ADSRs and three LFOs in my four-row system. One of the
ADSRs is the A141 VC ADSR, and one of the LFOs is the A147 VC LFO. The
others are the plain A140s and A145s, which have toggle switches for
rate range and more output jacks. It seems like a good mix.

Indeed. I find my self wanting
a Blacet time machine. Will Doepfer
ever produce a VC Delay?

Hi ethan

As far as I know: No. I know that he does not like to establish a product,
which is aleady available by an other manufacturer. There is no sense for
him.

And I have to say, that I can use nearly every digital delay from the 90ies
for this (I have a Korg SDD1200 and a VestaKaza Delay): There is a CV in
for the delaytime and an insert in the Feedbackloop in which I put a VCA.

definitely takes CV?

Florian,

If what you say is true, then Doepfer wouldn't offer a VCO, VCF, VCA,
EG, or any other module for that matter.

There is always room for one more excellent module, and I think a VC
BBD would be a wise choice.

How about it Dieter? Even Digisound offered a BBD/Reverb module.

Kevin

Florian,

I understand. I've seen it said here many times that Doepfer doesn't
like to release modules in competition with other manufacturers.

I was simply jumping on the opportunity to make a bit of noise over a
module I'd like to have.

Re: Request for Advice

2002-08-14 by petergrenader

My system actually has more control modules than anything
else. But that's me...I find the most limting thing about non
modular synths is the inability to create control voltage streams.

ALong with your ADSRs, may I suggest a trigger modifier and a
fixed voltage source (A-165 and 176). For about $75 total, these
two will allow you to use your ADSRs as LFOs as it is quite easy
to make your ASDR self oscillate with those two and they will
come in handy for other things as well.

hope this helps,

Peter

Since I did discuss a DCO i quite some detail with Dieter D and got the
impression that he was all against it I still feel that it was worth the
time. I don't know how much it takes to convice him(if it is even possible
to do so) into making stuff we wish, but it can't really hurt to add some
wishes and ideas. Unless it corners mister D into a sulking corner muttering
"you will have it my way or no way at all". The latter I find truly
fictional so keep wishing code_pig =)

I am also for a vd-controlled delayline by the way even though there are
things I wish more for.
