A100 / Dark Energy pots

A100 / Dark Energy pots

2011-01-19 by john m

Just used the dark energy for the first time and I've gotta say the build quality is excellent. I was very impressed with the smoothness of the pots, so much nicer than the stiffer a100 ones.

Doepfer, any chance of getting all future a100 modules with these pots?

John :)

The same pots are used in Dark Energy and A-100. The only difference is the
horizontal/vertical orientation. E.g. the A-111-5 or A-138m, A-183-X and all
other A-100 modules with horizontal orientated pots use exactly the same
pots as the Dark Energy/Dark Time. Maybe it's the diameter of the Dark
Energy knobs and the design/surface of the knobs (polished black with silver
cap) that makes the user think that higher quality pots are used in the Dark
Energy.

There was a similar issue with our keyboards. A few years ago we had a
cannibalized piano case at the Frankfurt Musikmesse. We replaced the piano
keybed by the keybed of our master keyboard LMK4+. Many visitors who were
playing both the "piano" and a stand-alone LMK4+ mentioned that the keybed
of the LMK4+ is not bad. But the keybed of the "piano" is much better. They
were very surprised as we told them that both are exactly the same !

Best wishes

Maybe you get better torque on the DE, giving the impression of more
smoothness

Dark Time Sequencer dimensions

2011-01-19 by David Bulog

Does anyone have the actual dimensions of Dark Time sequencer
Also does anyone know if the steps can be quantized
Finally why is the gate out only + 5V
)Many of the vintage sequencers eg Roland give you more headroom eg + 15V

thanks David

We have updated the Dark Time info page. Now you find more detailed
information about dimensions, weight and other specs.

It's possible to modify the Dark Time for 12V level of the digital output
signals (gate 1 and 2, clock, start/stop, reset). For this the center
terminal of in internal resistor network that includes the pull-up resistors
for all these outputs has to be removed from +5V and wired to +12V. We are
about to write an additional technical document (similar to Dark Energy)
that describes such details.

Best wishes

ahhh, interesting!
I'd swear there's a difference, but as you say....maybe in the mind :)

John.

Hello John

> I'd swear there's a difference, but as you say....maybe in the mind :)
Its simple physics: larger diameter of the knob = longer lever = less
force required = feels like going smoother. We all learned this in
school when we were 13 or 14 years old.

Anyone know if replacement knobs are available
anywhere for the Dark Energy?
(aside from buying another glide attachment)

thanks

The knobs are available as spare parts. You may order the knobs from the
representative in your country (or directly from us if there is no
representative in your country). For details please look at the online price
list on our website.

Might also be the difference between having it on a tabletop (Dark Energy)
and having it in a flightcase straight in front of you... Different use of
the hand/arm..

you can stand the dark energy upright and test side-by-side an a100 modular.
gentlemen, break out the lab coats.
