New poll for Doepfer_a100

2011-07-11 by Doepfer_a100@yahoogroups.com

Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the
Doepfer_a100 group:

In my search for a Korg MS-02 I haven't been successful so far. In building a great A-100 modular synth I was. This got me thinking: It would be great if Doepfer would add a module to the A-100 module list with the functionality of the Korg MS-02. I can imagine more people are interested. I sent the question to Dieter and he suggested to start a poll on this list. So here we go.

o I would be interested in a Korg MS-02 like module as long it's cheaper than 100 euro
o I would be interested in a Korg MS-02 like module as long it's cheaper than 150 euro
o I would be interested in a Korg MS-02 like module as long it's cheaper than 200 euro
o I'm not interested in such a module

AW: [Doepfer_a100] New poll for Doepfer_a100

Forgive me if I fail to see the point of this. Wasn't the MS-02 designed
specifically because the MS series runs on Hz/Oct as opposed to V/Oct? For
all other functions of the MS-02 there already exist modules in the Doepfer
range as far as I can see. So you want Doepfer to produce a Hz/Oct
converter?

The MS-02 was designed as converter between Hz/V and Oct/V synths so they can be
used together as if they all talk the same language. I want to investigate if
there is enough interest for a module that has the functionality of the Korg
MS-02. It makes it possible to integrate Doefer modules with Korg synths and
vice versa. You don't need an expansive SQ-10 but could use the A-155 sequencer
instead. Etc.

Since it would be potentially very useful to anyone with both Hz/V and Oct/V synths it would seem to make more sense as a stand-alone unit.
Kinda like the MS-02.

There's a schematic [1] available, and it doesn't look too complicated. Not sure what availability is like for the parts, but at least it doesn't have any curtis chips in it...

I'm about to bid on an old Hz/V synth myself, if I get it I will probably try to build something like that.

Or this Kenton card [2] might be an option.

Incidentally I would be interested to know what the tracking range is like when using a converter. I assume noise and errors will be exponentially amplified!

Oh, and hi, list - this is my first post.

/m

If you simply want to control our MS-10/20 from the A-155 such a converter
is not obligatory. You may use the CV coming from the A-155 directly without
any converter. Only the control scale of the A-155 rotary knobs is then a
bit non-linear. But as a sequence is usually adjusted by ear but not by
visual control of the knob positions this should be harmless. Only the
quantizer A-156 cannot be used then (unless you use the modulation input
which can be adjusted to 1V/oct, details on the FAQ page of our website).

Best wishes
Dieter Doepfer

P.S. I'm not even sure if the SQ-10 used linear or logarithmic pots. Maybe
someone knows details.

Hello,

A V/Oct --> V/Hz converter is not really necessary, as the MS20 provides
V/Oct inputs (VCO/VCF CV-In). For Gate->Korg Trigger conversion you may
use a A150 (VC switch) or a A165 (gate converter): the Korg trigger
input accepts switched triggers (close to ground) and/or inverted Gates.

I tend to disagree. having tried both methods of controlling the MS-20 over the years, using the native Hz/V and S-trig inputs has produced far more musical results in my experience, and has left the modulation paths open for pitch and timbre controls. I have considered building an MS-02 clone, knowing that many MS-20 owners would appreciate owning such a device to avoid the kludge of the workaround used by some (as mentioned below). it does work in a pinch though.

I think Elby Designs already has something like this in development ->
