Anybody else had a 2000µF capacitor in a beauty case explode?

I replaced one for a friend a couple of years ago and last night one went pop in my own beauty case - lots of smoke. Another is bulging a bit at the top.

I'm using homemade modules - nothing too fancy, just a passive ring mod with a tl072 buffer, and a 90˚ phase shifter with 3 x tl074 and a tl072, both of which which I have been using for ages.

I would have thought one of the regulators or diodes would have popped first if there was a problem with the current.

Anybody else had a similar experience?

Hi Sean,

You are right, drawing more current will more likely affect series devices like diodes and regulators. In the case of the reservoir caps maybe the voltage rating is inadequate - what voltage are the capacitors? Maybe replace with the next higher voltage!

Pay attention that the right power supply is used (9V AC output). A higher
voltage (e.g. 12V AC or 15V AC) will damage the capacitors as there is an
internal voltage doubler to obtain the required 12V. I don't think that
excessive current load of the modules damaged the capacitors.
