Gain on A-132-3

Gain on A-132-3

2012-12-16 by isoldeandisobelle

Hi,

I am fairly new to the world of Modular's, so I may be getting something wrong here - I am running the output of a A-110 through the A-107 which is going in to the A-132-3 (set to exp) which is being controlled by A-143-2 and the out put to A-138 mixer.

If the gain knob on the A-132-3 is set to anything other than zero, the sound of the oscillator is coming through without the envelope being activated, in fact even set at zero, there is still a tiny amount of sound but I have to turn the volume up to be able to hear this.

With the gain set at zero and the CV knob set to a desired position - all is well when the envelope is activated.....is this correct, or am I patching something wrongly.

Kind regards

Thank you very much to both of you for your replies, they have made it a whole lot clearer....just one other question, I read on this group that eventually the A-113 Subharmonic Generator will be made without the need for a 5v adapter...is this still the case?

Thanks again

That's exactly right. An analogue oscillator will *always* oscillate from the moment you turn it on, even between the notes. It doesn't even know when the notes begin and end, it only knows when to change pitch.

The attenuator/amplifier has a gain knob which controls how much of its input you're *constantly* hearing, and the CV knob controls how much of its input you hear *in proportion to the CV signal*.

I suspect I didn't quite grasp this the first week or so of having an A-100, which is why my first few tracks are so noisy (the first few tracks in my album Blast Off!), with subtle gain-knob-induced discordant humming throughout that's only really noticeable at the beginning and end of each track, when everything's supposed to be silent. In this time of softsynths, I've been complimented by a few people for keeping this noise in the final mix. :D

But yeah, if you don't want it, just keep the gain knob down and use the CV one only. :)

All the best,
Zoë.

This normal. You should see it this way: the gain knob controls the
'opening' of the VCA together with the control voltage at the cv input.
In your case this is an envelope which is most commonly a positive voltage,
so putting the gain at 0 is a good setting.

Try putting the gain knob at 12 hrs and plug in an LFO using the sine
output or triangle output.

Ernst
