Hi Danny

Yes, you could use an A-138 in place of an A-183-1 to attenuate a
single signal. It also gives you the added bonus of being able to
offset that signal by up to 5V - If you don't plug your signal in to
channel 1 then that channel's knob will add up to 5V to your signal at
the output.

If it's audio you're attenuating then the 138b is moreusefual than the
138a as it has an exponential response, rather then then a's linear
one.

This from Doepfer's site...

"From April 2004 an improved version of the module A-138b is
manufactured. For the revised versions control In1 works as a DC
offset generator (about 0...+5V) provided that no patch cord is
plugged into socket In1. If this feature is not required it can be
deactivated by removing a jumper on the pc board. Probably from summer
2004 even the A-138a will be manufactured with this improvement."

The 183-1's nice though as it gives you 2 passive independent
attenuators in just 4hp. Note that these are also VERY easy to build
yourself - probably the most common first DIY project for Eurorack.
Just 2 jacks and a pot for each attenuator. Cheap and cheerful!

Can someone tell me what's the difference between a A-138 Mixer and a
183-1 Attenuator, or is it only the difference between active and
passive, so I could use a A-138 instead of a A-183-1.
