Rachet Sequence with MAQ

Rachet Sequence with MAQ

2014-03-31 by Arian Leviste

I've been trying to copy this video of the MAQ doing a rachet sequence, but i can never get it to happen:

Are there limitations as to when you can rachet? it looks as if the video is not set up to receive any midi and is just used a stand alone sequencer. Is there another way to get the MAQ to rachet sequences?

Thanks,

Arian

Hi Arian...
Please let me know if you get this to work..I've not had much luck trying to follow the first video you mention. ;o(

Regards Phil

The 'ratcheting like Tangerine Dream' video on YouTube is mine. I'm happy to discuss the principles used if the explanation on the video isn't clear. I started by making a little passive switch-box to test the principle, then got a couple of Doepfer voltage-controlled switches to confirm it. Of course, you don't need two MAQ sequencers to do it, but the more channels you have to play with, the more control you have over the effect. There must be many other ways to achieve similar effects with Doepfer's sequencer and clock modules, and the COTK Ratchet Sequencer does look very good.
I think one of the other 'ratcheting' videos on YouTube is trying to do it with MIDI instruments. I think this is futile, as you need a CV-and-Gate system to do 'proper' ratcheting. You can of course imitate the effect with MIDI instruments using software sequencers such as Wok's Clockwerk/Ratchit, Numerology, or DIY ensembles in Reaktor.

My studio is currently inaccessible so I can't try this and post the result, but isn't it simply a matter of using separate rows for gate, timing, and pitch? (Also, I didn't watch the videos so forgive me if I am repeating their suggestions....and I am not intimately familiar with TD's sequencing style, but from what I gather, ratcheting is creating multiple triggers for the same pitch duration, and not simply speeding up and slowing down a sequence of notes)

In the sketch I made last night:
- I imagined Row 1 being used for the gate pattern being sent to the ADSR. PA1, G12, all notes on, producing a constant 1/8th note gate pattern.
- Row 2 is used for the timing of Row1, set to t.4 (I think, or whatever you prefer), allowing you to change the rate of Row1 from 1/8 to 1/16 or 1/32nd notes. G12 so that timing is changed along with the new pitch.
- Row3 is used for pitch data, set to whatever range and direction you like. G12, so pitches change every eighth note. G values for rows 1 and 3 are adjustable to set your slowest timing division.

Does this make sense? Anyone want to try it out?
